Zuba is a character in DreamWorks' Madagascar: Escape to Africa. He is Alex's father and Florrie's husband.
Zuba is voiced by the late Bernie Mac.
Background[]
Zuba is the alpha lion of the lion pride of the nature reserve in Africa. He is a proud father of his young son, Alakay and a loving husband with his wife, Florrie. He was often challenged to a battle with Makunga, a stuck-up and arrogant lion. One day while teaching his son to fight, Alakay instead starts dancing around and not paying attention to the challenge. Zuba points out that one day, Alakay is going to be just like his daddy, leader of the pride one day. Makunga challenges Zuba yet again, much to his annoyance. After Makunga calls Alakay a "pathetic excuse of a son," Zuba becomes outraged and then asks why he wants to be king. Makunga eplains that because he is better looking, has stylish hair and also wants to make people do what he says. Zuba tells Alakay to watch as he teaches Makunga a lesson. As he is fighting Makunga, Alakay wanders off the reserve and Zuba realizes his son is being kidnapped by poachers. Zuba attempts to save his son and begins chasing after the poachers, unaware that Alakay's crate had fallen into a river. Zuba eventually gave up and assumed the worse. He and Florrie grieved for years, thinking their son was truly gone.
