You’re trying to create an opportunity. Make me reckless, make me careless. Those things don’t happen with me.
~ Yassen Gregorovich to Alex Rider
Your father... Your father was... He was my friend. Listen to me. If you want to know the truth...Go to find the widow... Find SCORPIA. Find out... ...who you really are.
~ Yassen revealing his past friendship with John to Alex before passing out.

Yassen Gregorovich is the secondary antagonist of Amazon's television adaption of Alex Rider. He is an assassin for SCORPIA, a former friend of John Rider, the killer of John's brother Ian. He also has a complex relationship with Alex, whose life he saved more than once due to being indebted to his father, John, his former mentor. However, at the same time, Alex hates Yassen due to his role in killing his uncle Ian.

History[]

Background[]

Yassen Gregorovich was born in Moscow, Russia to Anton Gregorovich and Eva Dementyovna. In the books, Yassen's entire village and family was slaughtered by a crime lord.

Yassen met John Rider, an MI6 agent who was undercover as an assassin for SCORPIA. During an operation taking out a black arms dealer, Yassen showed emotion and advised his tell that he was hiding a gun in his holster. The Black arms dealer took him hostage and goaded John to kill him. As John told Yassen to close his eyes, he shot and killed the arms dealer and saved Yassen's life. However the bullet grazed the side of Yassen's eye, leaving a visible scar. In that instance, Yassen learned to never show emotion again. At some point, he met John's brother, Ian. It is heavily implied that he had no idea that John was a double agent for MI6. It is also unknown if Yassen ever met John's wife, Helen, as he implies to Alex he has limited knowledge on what happened to her.

Season 1[]

Season 2[]

Even though Yassen is wounded, he kills Damian after seeing him about to kill Alex, saving his life again. Yassen gives Alex his gun, thus granting him the chance to kill him. However, Alex decide not to and attempts to stop the bleeding, Yassen tells Alex that he was friends with his father John and to look for Scorpia. Alex stops the missile launch but when he returns to the hangar, he sees Yassen has escaped.

Season 3[]

Yassen escaped to the SCORPIA Headquarters, where he became Alex's handler and mentor during his training. However, Alex struggled to work under Yassen's tutelage due to the complicated nature of their relationship.

Yassen later abandoned the organization after learning Julia Rothman announced that she only recruited Alex as revenge against his father. At a change of heart, Yassen saved Alex yet again from Nile, the last Scorpia operative, by shooting them point blank before disappearing. Alex, presumably from their time together, doesn't identify Yassen as his, tells Kyra and Tom's savior. Shortly after nodding and acknowledging himself to Alex, Yassen disappears without a trace, leaving it open-ended if he or Alex will ever cross paths in the future.

Powers and abilities[]

Abilities[]

  • Skilled Assassin
    • Firearms/Marksmanship: Under John Rider's tutalege, Yassen became a skillful assassin with a proficiency foot firearms, being a skilled Marksmanship. To prove him to be a merciless assassin, he shot Ian Rider three times at point-blank range (claiming it was nothing personal, just his job) and shot and killed the Alex Rider clone. However he couldn't get a clean shot at Alex in Season 2 because he moved around enough to confuse Yassen. The only reason he hesitated when he had the boy in a corner was due to his shock at seeing Alex was somehow involved.
    • Combatant:
    • Knife Proficiency:
    • High Intelligence:
  • Survival Skills: He survived a shotgun to the chest after being shot by Damian Clay. Yassen likely would've died from his injuries had it not been for his strong will.
  • Emotional detachment/impassive tendencies: According to him, showing emotion is dangerous because as a job as an assassin, it gets you killed. As a young man, Yassen showed his tell to a black arms dealer that he and John were sent to kill, leading the arms dealer to figure out Yassen was hiding a gun in his hand and being held at gunpoint. John saved his life but the incident left him a permanent scar. As such, Yassen learned to be emotionally cold and impassive on jobs. The way he kills makes him a formidable and dangerous foe, as he did coldly shoot Ian despite saying it was nothing personal.

Weaknesses[]

  • Emotions: Showing emotion is one of Yassen's fatal flaws, as there were times that Yassen showed something other than coldness when he couldn't complete the task. When he met Alex for the first time, he looked at him with familiarity. Unfortunately for Yassen, this tipped Alex off and made him realize that the man may have some past with him. Shortly after assassinating Simon Marriat, he started hunting down Alex with a cold intent on killing him but hesitated upon seeing who it was, further solidifying his belief that showing emotion doesn't get the job done.

Quotes[]

Season 1[]

Just visiting. Another time, maybe.
―Yassen Gregorovich to Alex Rider upon his first meeting with the latter.
But we are not partners, Dr. Grief. One of the services my employer and I provide is to make people disappear. If you decide that is what is needed in this case, then you know what to do. Although seen as he is here, I imagine you could handle it yourself. After all, everything, is, under, control? Right?
―Yassen Gregorovich to Dr. Grief about their relationship

Season 2[]

Alex?
―Yassen to Alex expressing shock that he nearly killed the boy
Alex: "You work for Cray now? Do what he tells you? Like a dog? Is that all SCORPIA are? Dogs for hire?"
Yassen: "You’re trying to create an opportunity. Make me reckless, make me careless. Those things don’t happen with me."
Alex: "Then how did you get that scar? "
Yassen: "Be quiet now."
―Yassen Gregorovich after Alex taunts him.

Trivia[]

  • Yassen's real first name is Yasha but this is unmentioned in the series.
  • He also has a distinctive scar, that everyone notice first. A flashback revealed that John saved his life from a black arms dealer holding him hostage. The bullet grazed his eye, giving him a permanent scar. This comes from Russian Roulette, but in that version John spotted a black widow on Gregorovich's face and shot it off him while hitting their target.
  • Unlike the books, Yassen survives his canonical death and ironically is the one who killed Damian instead.
  • In the prior adaptations, Yassen has blonde hair and cold blue eyes on the books and red hair and green eyes in the movie. This time Yassen is portrayed with brown hair and brown eyes.
  • Unlike the book, Yassen and Ian indicate they know each other, given the familiarity in their conversation, and the fact Ian nicknames him "Yas" shortly before Yassen kills Ian. Nothing seems to point this way in the original series.
