The Werewolves, are the main protagonists of the supernatural TV series Teen Wolf. They are shapeshifters who can transform and have incredible powers such as heightened senses and Superhuman powers.
Because a Werewolf gains its power from the moon, full moons (and especially on supermoons, when the full moon is even closer to the Earth than it normally is) are when they are at their strongest.
Biology[]
Werewolves are humans in appearance. They can turn into a partially lupine form that includes glowing eyes (which are either gold, blue, or red depending on rank or other factors) pointed ears, mutton chops, claws and fangs, and a ridged brow.
People can be naturally born werewolves, as Derek, Peter, and Eli come from a long line of ancient werewolves.
An ordinary human or any other werecreature can transform into a werewolf but only by an Alpha werewolf. Scott McCall and Liam Dunbar were once humans but were bitten by an Alpha: Peter Hale bit Scott, who later bit Liam. Were-creatures can also be turned, as Scott was able to turn his friend Hayden from a Chimera to a werewolf.
In incredibly rare occasions, the claws of an Alpha can turn a human into a Werewolf if they scratch the human recipient deep enough, though it is considered less effective than the Bite. Unfortunately, when Peter did this to Kate in the last episode it didn't turn her into a werewolf but a werejaguar
Myths have also stated that drinking rainwater from the pawprint of a wolf can change a human into a lycanthrope, according to Sebastien Valet. However, these methods are not guaranteed to be successful.
Werewolves can also reproduce with other species. It is also possible for werewolves to have human children, as both Derek and Chris claim that there were human children killed on the night at the Hale Family Fire. Even though Malia was Peter's biological daughter, she, inherited her mother's powers over her father's.
Hierarchy[]
A Werewolf is strongest when in a pack and therefore, has a hierarchy.
- Alpha
- Beta
- Omega
- True Alpha
Powers and abilities[]
Werewolf Physiology: Werewolves are one of the most complex supernatural creatures in the world. They are individuals who can shapeshift from one to another. How a werewolf comes to power is either being born one or being bitten (like Scott McCall). Naturally born werewolves mostly grew up in the supernatural community and have infinite knowledge on how to be a werewolf. These types of werewolves keep control during a full moon. Naturally born werewolves don't see the bite as a curse as bitten wolves do but rather as a gift. However, bitten wolves also come to accept the philosophy as well, such as Scott McCall and Liam Dunbar. While they thought the Bite ruined their lives at first due to being bitten without consent, the two boys accepted that it is a part of who they are
- Super Strength: Werewolves have superhuman strength that enables them to perform extraordinary physical feats. They break and snap chains, punch through solid stone walls, lift grown adults, and throw them through solid surfaces and across rooms with ease. Older werewolves can also easily defeat younger or newly bitten wolves like Derek did when he was training with Scott McCall, Isaac Lahey, and Erica Reyes.
- Super Speed: Werewolves move, run, and react at speeds greater than even the finest human athlete. They could easily outrun anything, whether it is hunters, cars, etc. However, Werewolves run faster when they move on all fours.
- Super Agility/Reflexes: Werewolves use their super agility and reflexes the best, and mostly use this combined with their Athleticism.
- Super Durability: Werewolves are more durable and resistant to blunt force trauma than normal humans, strong enough for them to survive lethal force.
- Super Senses: Werewolves use their glowing eyes to see in total darkness, across long distances, and to perceive supernatural phenomena that cannot be seen with human eyes as well as use their heightened senses of smell and hearing to accomplish feats typically impossible for regular humans, such as sense approaching enemies through their scent or heartbeat, among others.
- Superhuman Hearing: Werewolves can hear people from a mile away or a faint whisper
- Heartbeat Monitoring/Lie Detection: Werewolves detect whenever someone is lying when they listen to their prisoner or target’s heartbeat.
- Super Smell: Werewolves can smell far beyond normal humans. They mainly smell for a person's chemo signs or pheromone levels. This allows them to track animals, humans, and supernatural creatures across long distances solely by scent. For example, when they were spying on Theo, Stiles told Liam to "smell" for his signatures. Even though they were a few miles away from the bridge Theo was on, Liam could smell his soap before smelling for his chemo signals.
- Superhuman Hearing: Werewolves can hear people from a mile away or a faint whisper
- Accelerated Healing: Werewolves possessed the ability to heal from most mild to moderate wounds within moments, and more severe wounds within hours. It prevents him from getting drunk and getting high on drugs or rapidly healing from injuries whey it took weeks.
- Longevity: As a Werewolf with an accelerated healing ability, they have a highly extended lifespan and would be able to maintain their youthful appearance for much longer than a normal human.
- Pain Absorption: Werewolves can take away the pain of another person. Their veins turned black whenever he activated his ability. He can touch animals, humans, and supernatural creatures to remove their pain. Derek first demonstrated this ability at the age of fifteen trying to relieve his dying girlfriend's pain. For example, Scott could only "take the edge" off another's pain but over, completely take away a person's pain, as he took away the agonizing pain Corey was experiencing after being stung by the part-scorpion Chimera, Lucas, ("Condition Terminal") or his best friend Stiles Stilinski's pain after he forcefully punched the engine of his Jeep. ("Parasomnia") Alphas are also advanced to another level, as Derek sacrificed his Alpha spark to heal Cora from her mistletoe poisoning
- Control During a Full Moon: While the full moon enhances a werewolf's ability, it also causes them to lose control. However, naturally born, and bitten Werewolves can learn to control their animal instincts during a full moon. Due to being born a werewolf, Derek would rarely fall under its disastrous effects. However, under certain conditions, even naturally born werewolves are still capable of losing control during this time. Created werewolves, however, have trouble keeping control of a full moon. They become more aggressive and susceptible to the full moon. However, through time and training, created werewolves learn to control their werewolf instincts and aggression almost as much as a born wolf would. By season 4, Scott McCall could control under a full moon.
- Animal Instincts: Werewolves are apex predators who assert their dominance over lesser animals such as dogs, cats, and deer to command them to do what they want. Alphas also assert their dominance over supernatural creatures or shapeshifters of lower statuses, either with Betas or Omegas. Scott forced Tierney and Jiang to reveal their werewolf eyes and was horrified to see that their once gold eyes were now steel-cold blue. Derek used this ability to scare off police dogs hunting him.
- Memory Ritual: Werewolves have the potential ability to view the memories of another person by piercing the back of their neck with their claws and entering their mind.
- Shapeshifting: Werewolves' ability to alter one's shape in a variety of ways, either to grow claws, and fangs, change the color of their eyes, or increase height and overall physical size. They can shapeshift into their human and human forms. However, certain Werewolves can shapeshift into animals
- Supernatural Eyes: Werewolves can shift their human eye color to either gold (For a normal beta), blue (For a Beta or Omega who killed an innocent), or red (as an Alpha). They see things that are way past the naked eye, as werewolves can see younger Kitsunes' aura (as seen with Scott, Derek, and the Steiner Twins when they look upon Kira. As the Nemeton has a special cloaking power, werewolves can use their supernatural eyes to find it. For example, Liam was trying to find the Nemeton with his human eyes when he traveled into the forest with Mason. However, Mason advised him to look for the Nemeton with his werewolf eyes. Under his best friend's guidance, Liam was able to find the Nemeton.
- Retractable Claws: Werewolves can summon their claws from their fingernail tips.
- Retractable Fangs: Werewolves can retract their fangs by having them grow from their human teeth.
- Pointed Ear Shifting: Werewolves’ ears are pointed
- Advanced Shapeshifting: Some werewolves can turn into actual wolves. Talia Hale had the rare supernatural ability to transform into one. Her children, Laura Hale and Derek Hale were people who can transform into full-shift wolves, showing it is hereditary. It was especially special for Derek, who was a Beta when his mother and sister were Omegas.
Alpha Powers[]
Alpha Powers: Alpha Werewolves come to be when an Omega or Beta Werewolf steals the power of another werewolf (Peter stole the Alpha Spark from Laura and plotted to do the same thing to Scott as well.) However, True Alphas are werewolves who were once Betas, but gained their powers through sheer force of will and didn't steal them from other Alphas. Scott McCall ascended to a True Alpha after resisting control from Peter and Derek Hale and showing his dislike for power-hungry werewolves. Additionally, True Alphas' powers can only be stolen by a Beta of their own making. For example, Scott's Betas Liam, and Hayden are the only ones who can take his power. However, none of them would do this because of their faithfulness and loyalty towards him. Alan Deaton admitted to Scott that he suspected his friend was one since the night Peter Hale bit him. In "Eclipsed,' Scott ascended to the ranks of a True Alpha after using his werewolf powers to break down a Mountain Ash barrier around Jennifer Blake.
- Power Granting: Alphas could turn anyone into a shapeshifter, mainly a bite. Peter succeeded in turning Scott McCall from a human to a werewolf via a bite. Banshees, due to being human women who simply channel supernaturals, have supernatural immunity. For example, Peter tried biting Lydia Martin to expand his werewolf progeny; however, she merely had an allergic reaction. It is also implied that Peter's bite activated her latent powers, as Lydia's grandmother, Lorraine predicted Lydia would inherit her powers one day. Banshees normally get their powers when they come of age at eighteen. Apart from a bite, Alphas' scratch can also turn a person into a shapeshifter. Peter Hale scarred Kate Argent so deeply that it was powerful enough to turn her into a Werejaguar. The only known individuals Scott has ever turned into a werewolf would be Liam Dunbar and his girlfriend Hayden Romero. However, some of Scott's betas will be failures if their body cannot handle it, which is why Scott couldn't turn Hayden into a Werewolf. The only other way of becoming a creature is by drinking water coming from a werewolf's paw print/puddle. However, some people's bodies reject the bite and they die from it, like Paige (Derek's girlfriend).
- Alpha Roar: The ability to use a roar to scare away supernatural creatures or force a were-creature in or out of transformation. Peter used the roar against Scott so he could turn into a werewolf and kill his friends. Scott used his Alpha roar to turn Malia back into a human and again when he wanted to help Eli activate his Healing powers. He also forced Tierney and Jiang to reveal their werewolf eyes and was horrified to see that their once gold eyes were now steel-cold blue.
- Healing Disruption: Alpha’s claws can also disrupt Omega and Beta-level werewolves' regenerative healing factor. Peter used this power on Derek and Scott when he wounded them in battle. Derek used his healing disruption ability on Scott after their battle in "Ice Pick.” It took Peter hours to heal from Scott's wounding him and the yellow Wolfsbane used to weaken him. However, at times, this can be manipulated. For example, Peter slashed Scott across the shoulder when he tried saving Myers from dying; however, it healed the next morning. Fortunately, there are ways for the healing process to be sped up, as Alan Deaton gave Scott medications to hurry up after his battle with Derek. Augmented werewolves such as Ethan Steiner and Aiden Steiner scarred Scott McCall in the battle of the Abandoned Mall, causing him to slowly bleed black blood. However, Scott's healing was also disrupted due to his grief and guilt over Derek's supposed demise.
- Beast Alpha Form: Alphas take on the form of a beastly Alpha Werewolf. As an Alpha Werewolf, Peter used to have the ability to transform into a large, monstrous wolf-like beast with black fur, crimson glowing eyes, and large claws and fangs. in his Alpha form, Deucalion’s skin turned dark blue-black, his muscle definition became more pronounced, and his face and brow became even more ridged than most creatures. When facing Deadpool Assassins, Scott nearly formed a Beast Alpha-like vision like Deucalion. However, he reverted to his old appearance when he realized that he was on the verge of taking a human life.
Weaknesses[]
- Wolfsbane: Werewolves are inherently weak if exposed to wolfsbane or Wolfsbane bullet/weaponry to prevent the victim from healing. The purple Scott unwittingly ingested in Lydia's drink and inhaled from the Coach's whistle caused them horrific hallucinations. Additionally, yellow can weaken or kill werewolves. The only way wolfsbane is extracted from the werewolf is if someone cauterizes it with a blow torch. (Derek did this to Peter after he had been poisoned by the Mute's ax, which had been laced with wolfsbane. He later did this to Scott in "The Wolves of War" in the science room after he had been shot by Tamora Monroe. However, he ended up passing out from the pressure as a result.
- Mistletoe: As a canine were-creature, mistletoe is poisonous to werewolves. He or she could get seriously ill as seen with Cora Hale and the reaction would be a mixture of blood and vomit.
- Mountain Ash: Werewolves cannot enter a barrier or leave a building made of mountain ash. However, Scott McCall's willpower and status as a True Alpha, allowed him to break through Jennifer's barrier with no trouble. However, werewolves can use the mountain ash as an offense as well, usually against other supernatural creatures. It is also capable of killing them, as seen when Sebastian Valet was killed by his sister with a weapon formed with mountain Ash and wolfsbane.
- Electricity: Electricity temporarily renders Werewolves without their powers for a while. It is also one of the few things capable of wounding him or killing him. However, he is friends on the frequency
- 'Letharia vulpine: The plant is capable of weakening/suppressing the werewolves' powers and shapeshifting abilities. He learned the hard way when Deaton injected a Nogitsune-possessed Stiles, who had been attacking him, and told Scott it was poisonous to any canine creature, even a fox spirit.
- Full Moon: This has become less of a weakness for bitten werewolves, now that he has learned to maintain their humanity during full moons. However, under certain conditions, werewolves are still capable of losing control during this time. For example, Chris Argent noticed how hard it was for Derek Hale, Isaac Lahey, and Scott McCall to control their shapeshifting. However, Boyd and Cora Were victims of the full moon's influence because they had been moon-deprived for 3 months after being imprisoned in a sealed bank vault. Scott McCall had trouble adjusting to his lycanthropy but as the series progressed, he learned to control his temper on a full moon. However, during "Party Guessed," Scott told Stiles he was somewhat apprehensive and refused to apologize to Alison because they were both fighting and because of the full moon. During a Supermoon, the Werewolves are even more powerful but also more aggressive. Liam grew furious at Scott when he refused to bite Hayden in fear that it would kill her, in fear of what it did to Derek's first love, Paige Krasikeva. Enraged, Liam started attacking Scott but stopped when Mason stopped him.
- Lunar Eclipse: When a lunar eclipse occurs, Scott will be rendered powerless until the event is over.
- Modified Canine Distemper Virus: A modified version of the Virus was created by The Chemist that would cause the werewolf or any canine were-creature to become sick and eventually lose their sight before they are killed off.
- High Frequencies: Werewolves' super hearing can be dampened if they hear high-level frequencies. The Argents' ultrasound transmitters cause the werewolves to hear high pitches and disorients their hearing, making them mistaken to be drunk.
Trivia[]
- Werewolf packs aren't acquired to have all members be werewolves. For example, the McCall Pack is famously known for including a variety of species, including a True Alpha Werewolf, a Beta Werewolf, a Beta Werecoyote, a Thunder Kitsune, a Banshee, and humans, etc.
- Sometimes, the werewolf bite has different effects on people. According to Derek, people transform into what reflects a person's personality.
- For example, Peter's bites didn't transform Lydia into a werewolf but instead activated her latent Banshee abilities at age 16 instead of her young adulthood.
- The bite transformed Jackson into the Kanima, a genetic mutation of the werewolf bite for those who have internal identity crises. Because he was adopted, Jackson never knew his biological parents and had internal problems with his adoptive parents. However, he was turned into a werewolf after being made aware of who he was by Lydia and dying at the claws of Peter and Derek brought him back as a werewolf.
- Kate Argent was not bitten; however, she did transform into a Werejaguar, presumably because of her sadism. Even as a hunter, Kate was a vicious predator in a sense. Her bloodthirst to kill werewolves regardless of their age as well as her disregard for humans who were descended from werewolves (Derek's human family members) or affiliated with them.
- According to Noshiko, both Werewolves and Kitsune (who wield fox power) do not get along similar to wolves and foxes but can become great allies. However, her daughter has a romantic relationship with Scott McCall and is friends with werewolves such as Liam Dunbar.
- Additionally, Werecoyotes and werewolves couldn't get along because wolves and coyotes were competitors for each other in real history. However, Peter Hale and Scott McCall have romantic relationships with Werecoyotes Corinne and Malia Tate
