Heroes and Villains Wiki

Werecoyotes are shape-shifters similar to werewolves. Malia Tate and her biological mother, Corinne, were one of the few werecoyotes seen on the television series.

Description[]

The Werecoyote shares the same kind of family classification as Werewolves as well, due to the fact that mundane coyotes and wolves are both canine creatures. Like werewolves, Werecoyotes eyes can be gold, to signify them as a beta, Omega that hasn't taken a human life or blue fit those that have killed innocent humans in spite of certain circumstances. They can also be affected by the full moon and cannot become drunk from alcohol. Female werecoyotes pass on a large portion of their powers to their children. While some, like Talia Hale, consider it a gift, others, such as Corinne, call it "theft."

According to several sources, werewolves and Werecoyotes rarely get along, just like real-life wolves and coyotes. However, Malia Tate and Corinne have both had romantic relationships with werewolves, Scott McCall and Peter Hale respectively.

They also have half-canine humanoid forms like werewolves, and some can shapeshift into full form coyotes.

Powers and abilities[]

Coyote Abilities/Werecoyote Physiology: Werecoyote are creatures of the night and therefore have similar powers to their werewolf counterparts. However, unlike werewolves, female werecoyotes transfer a large portion of their powers to their daughter, often weakening the mother. It is implied that werecoyotes are very power-hungry and that they will stop at nothing to regain their powers when the mother gives birth.

  • Super Strength: Werecoyotes can break chains and locks, punch through walls, and lift any heavy object with relative ease. However, for example, Malia initially needed to activate the ability on a conscious level, as she needed to break the lock on the door to Stiles' "Quiet room." However, she became accustomed to her powers after learning how to shift between human, werecoyote, and coyote form.
  • Super Speed: Werecoyotes possess incredible speed and agility which surpass even the most athletic humans. Werecoyotes can run on both two and four legs, both in their human and coyote forms. When Malia caught the scent of blood, she ran so fast through the woods that Chris Argent, a highly skilled marksman, had to concentrate hard to keep his rifle sights on her.
  • Super Agility/Reflexes: Werecoyotes can jump from very large distances and jump from several stories (especially off high buildings. They are more acrobatic, gymnastic, and athletic. Werecoyotes' reflexes are enhanced as well. They dodge bullets or any punches.z perceives objects more powerful than any human can, catching arrows in mid-air, and dodging bullets
  • Super Durability: Werecoyotes can withstand physical punishment much better than any human alive. They can survive falling off high-story buildings and being thrown across the room. Werecoyotes can tolerate being punched, kicked, thrown into walls, and falling from extremely tall heights without serious injury. Werecoyotes can withstand battle much longer than a human or werecoyote
  • Super Senses: Werecoyotes have an incredibly keen sense of smell, sight, and hearing better than most species. They are nocturnal and can see across long distances and track someone through their scents. They can hear whispered voices from afar and interpret chemosignals in scents. Their supernatural eyes can also see a Nemeton when it conceals itself or a Kitsune’s aura, especially the younger ones, who can't hide their aura as well as their adult counterparts.
  • Accelerated Healing: Werecoyotes' wounds and injuries can heal at a very advanced level, with marks disappearing within a few seconds. However, they cannot heal right away if they are scratched by an alpha. They are immune to human diseases but are susceptible to the paralytic effects of Kanima poison. They can also recover from their paralysis faster than a human and a werewolf, seen with Malia b
    • Longevity: Werecoyotes can live for years due to their accelerated healing. They have a decelerated aging rate and live longer and healthier than humans. It is unknown what their age rate is.
  • Shapeshifting: Werecoyotes shapeshift from a regular human to a coyote-like form; however, they display more coyote traits, including a ridged brow, fangs, glowing eyes, claws, mutton chops, pointed ears, and ridged brows. They can simply make their eyes glow to enhance their eyesight or identify themselves as supernatural creatures.
    • Advanced Shapeshifting: Werecoyotes can shapeshift into a true coyote. Malia could transform into a coyote by herself when she was only 9 years old. However, it wasn't until recently that she was able to consciously control it. It is unknown if this ability is something all Werecoyotes are capable of doing upon activating their powers, if it is a learned skill that any Werecoyote has the potential to achieve, or if it is a genetic trait that only some Werecoyotes possess. However, it is highly possible that Malia's heritage as a Hale could factor into her ability to do so.
  • Pain Absorption: Werecoyotes, like Werewolves, possess the ability to absorb pain from other living beings through tactile contact. They typically do this by putting their hands on the arm or affected body part of the being in pain and drawing the pain into themselves, which manifests as a darkening of the veins in the Werecoyote's hands that travels up her arms and into their chest, neck, and sometimes even her face, depending on how much pain is absorbed. Malia has used this power to siphon the pain experienced by Corey Bryant after he was burned by Jordan Parrish's hellhound fire and, with the combined efforts of her and Scott, absorb the pain experienced by the former's biological father, Peter Hale, after he was burned following his trip through the portal between the real world and the Phantom Train Station.
  • Animal Instincts: Werecoyotes possess the same animal instincts as their coyote counterparts, causing them to instinctively think and behave as a coyote would. This includes being territorial over every living environment, determining whether to fight or flee from danger, and being aroused by the scent of blood after a kill. Malia has specially developed animal instincts compared to her shapeshifter peers.

Weaknesses[]

  • Mountain Ash: Werecoyotes, like the majority of supernatural species in the show, cannot cross barriers made of mountain ash or rowan wood, nor can they touch or manipulate the wood or its ash in a non-barrier form. This makes them vulnerable to being trapped within a ring of mountain ash, or being prevented from entering an area that has been warded with it.
  • Wolfsbane: Werecoyotes are weakened or killed by exposure to wolfsbane, depending on the species and the method of exposure.
  • Full Moon: Though being a werecreature is considered a gift in the supernatural, it also comes with a price, which is that the Werewolf, Werecoyote, or werejaguar is beholden to the phases of the moon.
  • Lunar Eclipse: During the phase of a lunar eclipse where the moon is completely covered in the Earth's umbral shadow, a Werecoyote or other werecreature will lose all of their powers,
  • Electricity: Werecoyotes can be weakened or killed by exposure to electricity, depending on the level of voltage used.
  • Letharia Vulpina: As a canine Werecreature, Werecoyotes, like Werewolves, can be weakened by exposure to letharia vulpina,
  • Modified Canine Distemper Virus: Malia, a Werecoyote, was exposed to the virus and nearly died from it after beginning to bleed black blood from her nose, mouth, and ears, and after losing her vision completely. Malia was also the one who became the sickest in the shortest amount of time out of herself, the Werewolf Scott McCall, and the Thunder Kitsune Kira Yukimura.
  • Loud Noises: Werecoyotes, as supernatural creatures with heightened senses of hearing, are vulnerable to sounds at certain frequencies. For example, the Argent Hunters are known for using ultrasonic emitters that produce an extremely high-pitched noise that only animals and people with supernaturally enhanced senses can hear. Certain subsonic, low-pitched sounds can be used against Werecreatures as well
  • Scent of Blood from fresh kill: According to Chris, werecoyotes such as Malia go on a frenzy whenever there is fresh blood from a fresh kill, as seen when she was out at night.
