Princess Twilight Sparkle is the main protagonist of the television series, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and the overarching protagonist of G5 of My Little Pony: The New Generation.
She is voiced by Tara Strong with her singing voice done by Rebecca Shoichet, who also voices Sunset Shimmer.
Background
In the pilot episode, "Friendship is Magic'," Twilight learns of nightmare Moon's return after being banished into the moon for a thousand years. The only way to defeat her would be the elements of harmony. She warns Celestia of the situation at hand but instead is told to make friends in Ponyville while also overseeing preparation for the sun's celebration. However, with five other ponies, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy, Applejack, and Rarity, the girls overcome the obstacles Nightmare Moon has created and find the Elements of Harmony they use to defeat her once and restore her back to Princess Luna. After the adventure, Celestia allows Twilight to stay in Ponyville to "study" about friendship. However, she allows Twilight to stay because of her newfound friendship with the girls, forming the Mane Six.

Personality
Out of all her friends, Twilight uses her rationalizing skills to come up with perfect explanations as to why certain events play out. At times, out of all her friends in general, Twilight is the most rational of the main characters. For example, when she first met Zecora, she disregarded all of her friends' claims that the zebra was an evil witch and that she was strange. For most of the episode, she gave the zebra the benefit of the doubt. eventually her friends' superstitions got the better of her, showing that at times, her rational mind is questioned. However, she realized herself to be a fool when she saw Apple Bloom was alive and well and the rumors about her were not true. Additionally, she also does not believe in curses or bad luck, which Rainbow Dash finds strange because Twilight wields magic herself. She also had high disbelief in Pinkie's "Pinkie Sense" to tell if danger was close by. She was also the only one who was able to tell that Princess Cadance was not her beloved sister-in-law and actually Queen Chrysalis in disguise; however, to be fair, most of her friends were just too distracted with the wedding to notice any of Twilight's cares and concerns. She also appears to be deathly afraid of snakes and bats, especially quesadillas because they are too cheesy and ladybugs after a swarm of them infested the family home. Like Pinkie Pie, she keeps a cheerful and optimistic personality, looking to the positive aspects at life, even when they become quite challenging. She is also very knowledgeable about Equestria's history, as seen in such episodes as Luna Eclipsed and "Testing, testing 1, 2, 3," she almost passes out when she finds out that the Canterlot Library has a restricted section in My Little Pony Equestria Girls: Forgotten Friendship, a place she previously had not visited. She was over-excited when her brother Shining Armor and sister-in-law Cadence mentioned it when they arrived. She also enjoys research paper and learning anything new. Even as a young unicorn, she was wise beyond her years, despite only being a teenager. She is highly skilled and educated with magic, being a child prodigy, which carried into adulthood, being able to solve what Starswirl the Bearded could, which was friendship. Because of Twilight's obsession with research, it caused her to develop somewhat poor social skills that resolved over the years living in Ponyville. Apart from her bookworm persona, she is also a resourceful, capable leader who is willing to fight and take charge, even taking it upon herself to fight Nightmare Moon, showing she is a capable fighter and will defend her friends, family and Equestria to the death.
On the concept of friendship, Twilight had very few friends and it was something she struggled with. This is exemplified in the song "Best Friends till the End of Time," Twilight mentions that friendships use to make her feel uneased and "queasy" for the subject. It is shown in the flashbacks of "Celestial Advice" that Twilight was gifted and very studious, but Celestia worried for her because while everyone else took lab partners, Twilight worked on her labs alone, preferring to be a loner. This is partially what caused Celestia to make Twilight move to Ponyville so she could make friends and learn to appreciate friendship so they could unlock the Elements of Harmony. The experience in "Friendship is Magic" Twilight points out to Celestia she learned so much and was already sad to leave, prompting her mentor to let her stay in Ponyville to not only do research on friendship but so she could remain with her friends. It turns out that the Mane Six's friendship is fairly important because without Rainbow Dash's Sonic Rainboom, they would not have received their cutie marks. Time travelling to other places made Twilight realize this in the Season 5 finale, when she saw the dark futures that followed and partially caused Starlight to reform. According to her in "The Times They Are a Changeling," as the princess of Friendship, she desires the goal to spread it throughout Equestria but also points out that sometimes, she needs to learn more about Friendship after witnessing Spike stand up for his friend Thorax the Changeling because they judged him too quickly. She also befriended Starlight Glimmer after learning her past and forgave her for her misdeeds about traveling in the past and also forgave Discord for his betrayal, showing she indeed is quite forgiving. Twilight also helped reform Tempest Shadow, who joined her in defeating the Storm King and becoming one of her allies.
Although usually calm-headed, caring and polite to her friends, Twilight will immediately lose her temper. This especially happens when she deals with Discord in their initial relationships, when someone insults Celestia or messes with her books. She was also enraged at Lord Tirek for destroying the Golden Oaks Library which was not only a place for books, but it was a place she considered home. Needless to say, Twilight is an individual that no one should mess with, because despite being friendly and a forgiving person, she would also fight back, even trying to destroy the dungeon Chrysalis trapped her in when her brother's safety was threatened, showing a protective side of Twilight. She often losing her patience and temper, rarely with her own friends. This happened in the film, where Twilight shouted that she didn't want to have friends like the Mane Six after getting them banished by the hippogriffs when she tried to steal one of their pearls, they needed to defeat the Storm King; however, Twilight was immediately remorseful for the things she said to them and tried calling them back. This only led her to being kidnapped by Tempest Shadow. After they returned to rescue her, Twilight and her friends shared mutual apologies and acceptances.
Twilight will always band with the Mane Six whenever Equestria is in danger and the friendships are tested makes them stronger. Her experiences led her as a great mentor to Luster Dawn, who has a very similar personality to Twilight at the beginning of the series and, like Celestia, showed Luster that even over time, friendships never die.
Powers and Abilities

- Alicorn Physiology: With her alicorn powers, she has become one of the most powerful magic users in the entire world.
- Light Magic: Even when she was a unicorn, Twilight could perform great and powerful spells and adapt to any form of magic or ghost power. It usually manifests in a magenta pink color.
- Levitation: Twilight has the ability to levitate any object or any person.
- Transfiguration: Twilight can transform an object or person into an alternate form. She was able to transform an apple into a carriage and mice into horses (The Best Night Ever). She was also able to force a Changeling who was in the form of her other friends to transform into their natural forms. (A Canterlot Wedding, part 2) However, she can misfire, as once she tried to turn an apple into an orange; unfortunately she was distracted by Pinkie Pie and turned a frog and bird into a half-orange instead. She reverted a all the copies Pinkie Pie made back into their natural form of water and sent them back to the Mirror Pool (Too Many Pinkie Pies) She also turned herself and her friends into breezies to help the same species get back to their home. (It Ain't Easy Being Breezie) and turned herself into an illistration to talk to Moondancer when she would not look at her. (Amending Fenses).
- Copy and Paste Spell: She managed to creat a magical form of copy and paste to copy the exact text of a scroll into her magical journal. (Sunset's Backstage Pass)
- Voice Manipulation: Twilight can manipulate the sound of her voice, as she amplified her gvvioce to stop both Hooffields and McColts families to stop fighting (The Hooffields and tMcColts).
- Video Recording: She used her horn to get a confession out off Svengallop (The Man Attraction)
- Illusions/Simulation Creations: Twilight once made simulation of potential paths for Starlight, but she controlled most of them. (Celestial Advice)
- Time Travel: Twilight is able to travel through time, which she does to talk to her past self. (It's About Time.) When Starlight tries to stop the Rainboom from happening, Twilight time-travels via the Friendship Map.
- Dark Magic: Twilight once turned her light magic into dark magic.
- Dark Crystal Manipulation: She replicated King Sombra's dark spells to find the hidden passageways in the Crystal Empire's castle by temporarily reverting the throne room into the one it once was when Sombra ruled. It led her to the missing Crystal Heart
- Magical Energy Blasts: From her magical horn, Twilight is able to shoot magic energy blasts from her horn, which she often uses to attack her enemies. Combined with Starlight Glimmer, the girls were able to magically fight the Pony of the Shadows.
- Thought Manipulation: Twilight was able to use a spell that stopped the Parasprites from eating food and to stop vampire fruit bats from sucking all the juice from the apples.
- Love Inducement: Twilight can enchant an object to make ponies fall in love with either each other or a certain object.
- Animation: Twilight can bring any inanimate object to life.
- Dowsing: She can use a spell to sense and find gems, similar to Rarity.
- Memory Manipulation: Twilight has the ability to restore a pony's memories, as she restored all her friends' memory of their time together to break Discord's spell over them.
- Heat Generation: Twilight has the ability to create heat so she can melt things, as she melted the snow in "Winter Wrap Up"
- Hydrokinesis: Twilight ahs the ability to control and manipulate water. In "Magical Duel" she created a spell to manipulate the water and transform it into water spears.

- Photokinesis: Twilight can control and manipulate light.
- Spell-Casting: Twilight can perform and cast her own spells. She is an exceptional student, having been able to successfully cast spells since she was a child. However, her spells can sometimes backfire, as she cannot reverse any of Discord's spells, even a fail-safe spell.
- Teleportation: Twilight has the ability to teleport herself, other people and objects from place to place. All she has to do is think about where she wants to go. She first teleports herself from her veranda to the book shelves in "Friendship is Magic, part 2. However, Twilight didn't know that her teleportation spells ever work until teleporting herself from an alley to a library (The Ticket Master). She also teleports other people or items, trying to teleport Spike to her several times to remove the Lipstick mark off his cheek. She can also teleport herself and other characters. (Dragon Quest).
- Magic Immobilization: Twilight can immobilize any person, as she managed to suspend her best friends' movements when they were running amok in the Castle of the Two Sisters. She later used magic to immobilize the Hoofields and the McColts (The Hooffields and McColts).
- Foresight
- Book Jumping: Twilight can enter books,a s she transformed herself into an illustration because Moondancer was ignoring her in "Amending Fences.
- Crystal Imprisonment: Like Starlight Glimmer, Twilight can trap her victims in a crystal.
- Forcefield Generation
- Smoke Generation: Twilight can generate/create smoke which she often uses to confuse her opponent.
- Summoning: Twilight can summon anything or anyone and conjure anything out of the blue. She managed to summon a parasprite.
- Power Augmentation: With Starlight Glimmer, she was able to double the strength of her magic when she and Starlight combined their magic to fight the Pony of Shadows.
- Magical Bind: In "Shadow Play - Part 2" Twilight uses a spell to cast a magic rope to save Stygian from the Pony of Shadows.
- Wall Generation: Twilight can create walls from magical energy as a form of barrier.
- Flight: With her wings, Twilight has the ability to fly to great heights, and like Danny, can fly into the skies.
- Paranormal Resistance: It is shown that Twilight most likely would resist any paranormal phenomenon, especially when it comes to ghosts as she was not affected by Ember's hypnotic spell or being overshadowed by Vlad Masters.
- Light Magic: Even when she was a unicorn, Twilight could perform great and powerful spells and adapt to any form of magic or ghost power. It usually manifests in a magenta pink color.
- Friendship Magic/Elements of Harmony: Due to being an element of Harmony, Twilight is able to tap into the Elements of Harmony. Being the Spirit of the Element of Magic, she is able to access the Rainbow Magic.
- Rainbow Generation: Together with her friends, Twilight and the rest of the Mane Six can create the Rainbow Power to defeat their enemies.
- Petrification: With the magic of the rainbow, The Mane Six turned Discord and the Legion of Doom to stone.
- Purification: The Mane Six used their magic to purify a Princess Luna of the dark magic corrupting her and influenced her as Nightmare Moon.
- Power Augmenting: As their strong bond as friends, the girls enhance their own abilities. With the love of her friends, Twilight and the Mane Five were able to defeat various villains, even an empowered Tirek was easily defeated by them.

Applejack
Twilight met Applejack when she first came to Ponyville to overlook the Sun Celebration on Celestia's orders. Applejack was immediately friendly with the anti-social pony and happily shook hooves with her. Twilight was overwhelmed during their first meeting both due to her anti-social skills and because she met all of Applejack's family members in one sitting. She also attended a brunch with the Apple family the same day, mostly due to Apple Bloom's pleads. The first time Twilight knew she could trust Applejack was when she saved her from falling off a cliff Twilight hung onto. Apple told her to slowly let go, honestly telling Twilight she would not fall. It was true, as Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash were down below and there to catch her if she fell. During the confrontation with Nightmare Moon, Twilight realized this was the moment that made Applejack represent the Element of Honesty
Overall, both Applejack and Twilight probably get along the most because of their shared love of working hard and making sure they are efficient in their works. Apple also affectionately addresses her as "Twi" and "Sugar cube" (as she does with the ones she is closest to). In Season 6, Applejack reveals she thinks of Twilight, their friends, and all her relatives as "practically family", when she made a cradle with her own hooves (as it was an Apple family tradition). They more or less have a sisterly relationship with each other.
