Tui and La are overarching characters in the Avatar franchise. They are the spirits of the moon and the ocean respectively.
Biography[]
Tui and La were the Moon and Ocean Spirits who chose to live in the mortal world for one night as Koi fish. Tui also has the power to waterbend and heal, as he has a portion of his essence to a dying infant, Princess Yue. Commander-turned-Admiral Zhao plotted to kill the Moon Spirit to deprive the waterbenders of their ability to bend. He was confronted by Aang, Sokka and Princess Yue. Aang attempted to reason with Zhao, such as warning him that killing one of the spirits will bring imbalance and offering himself up as a his prisoner again if he spared the Moon Spirit. Unfortunately, Zhao didn't listen to reason, causing Aang, Sokka and surprisingly assisted by Iroh, to fight him. Despite their combined efforts, Zhao stabbed Tui with Kuruk's knife when he saw her trying to return to the pond, killing her and causing the Moon disappeared. La, embittered and enraged, merged with Aang while he was in the Avatar State, and left to search for his missing partner. However, he was later revived when Princess Yue gave her life force up to him.
La released Aang from her hold and returned to join her partner again.
Appearance[]
Tui and La take the basic form Koi fish. Their appearances are the opposite of each other, with La having a photonegative appearance to Tui. La's second form is basically a bigger, bluer, anthropomorphic version of a Koi fish, and is attained when Aang and La fuse their life forces together to avenge Tui after Commander Zhao slayed him.
