Triceratops is an extinct genus of ceratopsian dinosaur that lived in North America during the Late Cretaceous period. It is famous for its three horns and frill which were used for defense against predators and compete with others of its kind during the mating season. It lived alongside Tyrannosaurus rex and Ankylosaurus.
Triceratops is one of the most common dinosaur fossils found. More than 50 skulls have been found. Within the genus, at least 7 species have been identified. The ceratopsian family is one of the most successful and varied of the Late Cretaceous.
Triceratops is the largest member of this family. It has a huge beak out front and 800 teeth at the back of the mouth for chewing tough plants.
