Toph Beifong is one of the two tritagonist (alongside Sokka) of Avatar: The Last Airbender and a minor protagonist in the sequel series, Avatar: The Legend of Korra.

She is the most powerful Earthbender of her generation and Team Avatar's sixth traveling companion who runs away from home in order to help her friends stop the evil Fire Nation. In the series, Toph was born blind ; however she uses her other heightened senses in order to teach Aang Earthbending. However, she often clashes with Katara due to their different personalities and views.

By the time of the sequel series, Toph is the mother of two daughters, Lin and Suyin, and an elderly woman.

Background[]

Personality[]

Toph is fiercely independent, direct, belligerent, and practiced in taunting and insulting her opponents and on occasion her friends, particularly Sokka. On several occasions Toph appears picking her nose, spitting, and belching loudly. As she explained to Aang and his companions, she does this intentionally as a rebellion against the principles of refined culture that her aristocratic parents attempted to make her conform to.

74 years later, Toph still displayed that nonsensical, sarcastic and witty attitude, even calling Korra "Twinkle Toes" after previously calling her friend and the last Avatar incarnation, Aang.

Physical Appearance[]

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Earthbending/Geokinesis: Toph Beifong is one of the most powerful, if not the most powerful, Earthbender in the entire series. Ever since childhood, Toph has displayed an affinity with the Earth, having first understanding earthbending when she encountered badgermoles in the tunnels of Omashu. They understood her because they were blind as well. At only age 12, Toph had mastered her powers, enough to win a probending fights as the "Blind Bandit." She later served as Aang's earthbending Master and also taught Korra how to metalbend the Red Lotus' poison out of her system and later learned how to master metalbending and sandbending
    • Metalbending: Since metal has speckles of Earth within them, Toph learned how to bend it when she escaped from the metal cage that her kidnappers imprisoned her in. Toph later started her own school and founded her own police task force, who became the authorities in Republic City. Eventually, her skill with metalbending developed to the point where she could effectively defeat comet-enhanced firebenders during the battle at Wulong Forest with the technique
    • Mudbending: Earthbenders, like waterbenders, bend mud due to the presence of earth within. Toph used mudbending to throw in Katara's face during one of their training sessions with Aang.
    • Sandbending: Toph managed to make a detailed sand version of Ba Sing Se during her time relaxing at Ember Island.
    • Seismic Sensing: Earthbenders can detect vibrations in the ground to perceive objects, people, and other aspects of their environment,Due to being blind. As a result of her blindness, Toph felt the Earth beneath her feet, hence why she is barefoot on some occasions. However it doesn't work on environments with sandy surfaces, as she couldn't feel the ground beneath her feet when her friends crossed the desert.

Abilities[]

Weakness[]

  • Metal: Initially, Toph and earthbenders could not access their powers when they were trapped in prisons made of metal. However, since metal has speckles of Earth within them, Toph learned how to bend it when she escaped from the metal cage that her kidnappers imprisoned her in when they were on their way to return her to her parents.
  • Wood: Toph and earthbenders could not access their powers when they were trapped in prisons made of wood. This is shown when she couldn't break herself and Katara out of their wooden cage until Katara used her own sweat to water bend

Possessions[]

Role in the Series[]

Avatar: The Last Airbender[]

Toph's first appearance is in "The Swamp" when Aang, Sokka and Katara are trapped in the marshes and suddenly separated from each other. Suddenly, Aang heard a little girl laughing and saw her on top of one of the roots. As he tried chasing after her, he saw she was gone. Aang recognized her during Earth Rumble VI in Gaoling, where she was the reigning champion under the name "The Blind Bandit". During their fight, Aang accidentally best her in their duel together because Toph can't sense air currents from behind.
