Tommy was a supporting antagonist in the original The Karate Kid. He was a member of the Cobra Kai Dojo and Johnny Lawrence's gang.
He was portrayed by the late Rob Garrison.
History[]
Past[]
Tommy attended West Valley High School, where he met Ali Mills and developed a crush on her. At some point later, he joined Cobra Kai, where he met and befriended Johnny Lawrence, Dutch, Jimmy, and Bobby Brown. Tommy had thought about asking Ali out, but he never really did. He finally put his feelings aside upon learning she was already dating Johnny.
He faced and lost to Johnny in the final of the 1983 All Valley Tournament, but according to Johnny, he put up a tough fight. It is said that he defeated Darryl Vidal shortly before in the semifinals.
Karate Kid I[]
Like Johnny and the rest of his friends, Tommy repeatedly bullies Daniel LaRusso, both in and out of school. During the school's Halloween party, Tommy and his friends beat up Daniel, who is then defended by his karate sensei, Mr. Miyagi. The old man defeats all of the Cobra Kai, leaving Tommy with an injured arm as a result. They aren't allowed by Sensei Kreese to fight Daniel until the tournament.
At the All Valley karate tournament, Tommy faces Daniel in the fourth round. Despite having scored a point, Daniel manages to beat him. Throughout the Tournament, Tommy supports Johnny in both the semi-finals and the final. However, Johnny loses to Daniel in the final.
Karate Kid II[]
Following Johnny's loss to Daniel, Kreese berates the teen for his failure and strangles him in the parking lot. Tommy and the others (except for Dutch) try to defend Johnny, asking Kreese to let him go, with Tommy getting beaten up by Kreese when he tried to intervene. However, Johnny is saved by Miyagi, who defeats Kreese. After which, Tommy and his friends leave Cobra Kai for good.
Karate Kid III[]
Tommy and his friends appear in the opening montage of Karate Kid 3. Presumably he and the rest of the Cobra Kai students resigned from the dojo after the incident with Kreese.
Cobra Kai[]
34 years later, it is revealed that Tommy has been diagnosed with cancer, so he doesn't have long to live. He is now much calmer and more peaceful without Cobra Kai, although he maintains the sarcasm that characterized him in his adolescence. After a call from Bobby Brown, Johnny and the other ex-Cobras decide to spend a whole day together for the last time. The group spends their day fighting troublemakers guys, drinking and riding motorcycles, reliving their teenage days. Following a final talk with Johnny, Tommy dies peacefully in his sleep. At dawn, his friends discover that Tommy had passed away and are saddened.
