The North is one of the realms in Westros and one of the main locations of the novel A Song of Ice and Fire and the 2011-2019 TV adaptation, Game of Thrones.

History[]

Background[]

Previously, it was one of the regions that comprised the Seven Kingdoms after Aegon's Conquest, but it withdrew during the War of the Five Kings under the leadership of Robb Stark, the King in the North. Following the Red Wedding, the North came back under the control of the Iron Throne, governed by House Bolton. After House Stark regained authority over the area, the North once again declared its independence under Jon Snow, who subsequently pledged allegiance to Queen Daenerys Targaryen in return for her support during the Great War. Ultimately, Bran Stark granted the North its independence once more after the Last War.

The North is governed from Winterfell by House Stark and is the largest of the nine principal regions on the continent, nearly matching the combined size of the other eight. Its population is below one million, and it is regarded as the most impoverished region among the Seven Kingdoms.

Legend has it that the Kingdom of the North was founded eight thousand years ago by Bran the Builder, the progenitor of House Stark.

Geography[]

The kingdom of the North is filled with rivers and plains. There are forests and mountains in the northwest and Swamps in the Neck along southern border; the climate can range from temperate to sub-arctic. The North is usually populated by the Northmen, Crannogmen in the Neck, Free Folk of the Gift, knights of the vale in the Winterfell.
