Pemphredo, Enyo and Deino, better known as the Stygian Witches are major antagonists in the 1981 fantasy adventure film, Clash of the Titans and its 2010 remake of the same name.

They are based on the Graeae, witches who share with Perseus on how to kill the Kraken in both versions. They are portrayed by Flora Robson, Anna Manahan, and Freda Jackson in the original movie and by Ross Mullan, Robin Berry, and Graham Hughes in the remake.

Background[]

The Stygian witches are three immortal women who hold great knowledge and power. However, the Stygian Witches are cannibalistic creatures.

Clash of the Titans (1981)[]

In the original film, Cassiopeia sent her oracles to Stygia for advice, but the party nevr returned. Perseus and Andromeda are advised by Ammon about the Stygian witches and warned about their cannibalistic reasons. Hephaestus builds a robotic version of her pet owl Bubo, who leads the party to Stygia. By taking their magical eye, Perseus forces them to reveal how they can kill the Kraken. The lead witch tells Perseus that Gorgon Medusa's head can be used to kill the Kraken, who will become petrified if looking upon her gaze. They warn them that Medusa lives on the river Styx at the edge of the Underworld and tell Perseus he must wrap her head in a red cape because Medusa's blood is poisonous. Perseus throws the magic eye on the floor as the three blind sisters struggle to look for their eye.

Clash of the Titans (2010)[]

In the 2010 remake, the Stygian Witches have a same role in the remake. It is revealed that Stygia was once a great kingdom like Argos, but the city was left in ruins after the Kraken destroyed it when he defeated the Titans. The sisters lived alone and also shared one eye together. At first, Perseus wants to reason with the sisters, much to Io's discomfort. However, a small scuffle enrages between the Stygian Witches and Perseus' companions. By taking their magical eye, Perseus forces them to reveal how they can kill the Kraken. The Witches do so by telling them that Medusa lives in a temple in the Underworld on the River Styx. Perseus throws the magic eye on the floor as the three blind sisters struggle to look for their eye. However, the sisters find the eye and warn Perseus that he and his friends will die on this quest, much to Io's fear.
