This article is about the character from the 2010 film series. For book version, see Stoick the Vast (Books) or the version from the 2025 film, see Stoick the Vast (2025).
Stoick the Vast is Hiccup's father, leader of the Hairy Hooligan Tribe and one of the two overarching protagonists in How to Train Your Dragon franchise. He is also the husband of Valka, the best friend of Gobber the Belch, the father-in-law of Astrid Hofferson, the former owner of Skullcrusher and Thornado, the paternal grandfather of Zephyr and Nuffink Haddock and the ancestor of Olivia and Tom Kullersen.
Stoick has a stained relationship with his son, whom he had raised alone after Valka was taken by dragons. Over the course of the series, Stoick becomes more supportive of Hiccup and sees that he has what it takes to become the next Chief of Berk. Once a renowned dragon killer, Stoick became bonded with a Thunderdrum Thornado before he set his dragon free. He later became bonded with a Rumblehorn, Skullcrusher.
Stoick is featured in two flashbacks, due to his sacrifice from the second film and frequently mentioned.
The first flashback occurs at the film's start, where Hiccup is troubled by Gobber's warning that rescuing more dragons from the Northern Alliance will increase the danger for Berk and the Hooligans. Hiccup recalls moments spent with Stoick on the cliffs, gazing at the ocean while nestled in his father's arms. During this time, Stoick would tell his son stories on how their ancestors settled on Berk. He then told Hiccup about the Hidden World, a safe haven for all dragons and how he hoped to find the realm and block it off to end the war between the humans and the dragons for good.
Stoick is seen in a second flashback, after Hiccup flees the Hidden World with Stotmfly, Toothless and Astrid after being found out by a rogue dragon. It is a silent flight back home, as Hiccup is wrecked with guilt by ruining his chances with the Light Fury. He looked back to a time where Hiccup found his dad crying after getting a glass of water. However Stoick quickly what's the weather tears and invites Hiccup to sit with him by the fire. When Hiccup asked Stoick why he never remarried after Valka died, Stoick said he didn't want to have another wife because Hiccup was enough. This made Hiccup realize he had blown Toothless' chances and gives him three opportunities to let him go.
Stoick is mentioned several times within the movie as well. Grimmel first mentions the late chief when he referred Hiccup as "Stoick's boy" after Grimmel learned from the dragon Hunters that Hiccup is always saving dragons.
Later, Grimmel invaded Hiccup's home and meets Hiccup for the first time as he sits in Stoick's chair. He claimed that he knew Hiccup's father back when he was a dragon killer and mocked Hiccup with how Stoick changing his opinions about dragons is what got him killed. Enraged, Hiccup grabbed his sword, revealing he set a trap for Grimmel, and that Grimmel tranquilized Fishlegs not toothless. Hiccup glared at Grimmel and called him out for sitting in his father's chair.
After his house is burned down by Grimmel, Hiccup (at the council) told them he found several of Stoick's journals and notes pertaining to the Hidden World, which is where they will head to protect their dragons.
At the end of the movie, after bidding farewell to their dragons, a statue of Stoick was built on New Berk with Hiccup and Astrid finally marrying in front of the statue so Stoick is there in spirit.
