Spike Witwicky is the human protagonist in the G1 version of The Transformers. He is the son of Sparkplug Witwicky and best friend and fighting partner of Bumblebee. In some versions, he is the oldest Witwicky son, with a younger brother, Buster. He is one of first human ally and closest friends of the Autobots. While he considers them to be his friends, Spike is closest to Bumblebee and Hound. He helped fight the Autobots' rivals, Megatron and his fierce Decepticons for decades. By 2005, Spike had been happily married to his love and longtime girlfriend, Carly and the father of their son, Daniel.

He is voiced by Corey Burton, who also voiced Sunstreaker and Brawn, in the series Zeus in Hercules: The Animated Series and Cad Bane from the Star Wars franchise.

History[]

Background[]

Spike Witwicky was born in 1970[1] to Sparkplug and Mrs. Witwicky. His father was a widower, meaning his mother passed away when he was young and Spike was raised solely by his father, who he has a close relationship with.

Spike is the first human protagonist of the Transformers cartoon and the only one to appear in all four seasons of the series as well, alongside Optimus Prime and Bumblebee. He is first introduced to his love interest in the series, Carly Spencer, who he met at the arcade. However, she seemed more interested in the Autobots than in him until things got serious as the series progresses.

Season 1[]

In 1984, Spike was fourteen years old while working in the area as an oil rig employee with his father, barely old enough to have even a licence. When the Autobots awoke from their 6 million years sleep, Deceptions led by Megatron attacked Spike's workplace in search of ways to find their way back home, laying waste to it. Unfortunately, Sparkplug and Spike were trapped in the destroyed oil rig and left for dead by the other Decepticons. However, Optimus Prime heard their cries for help and saved the two humans by swimming them back to safety. He told the father and son duo about his people's origins as Autobots from the distant planet of Cybertron. At first Optimus rejected Spike and Sparkplug's help in fear of causing them further harm. However, the two humans convinced Optimus to allow them to help because they weren't able to navigate the Earth without their guidence. The boy immediately befriended the other Autobots such as Mirage, Hound and Bumblebee. During one of the missions to stopping Megatron, Spike attempted to save Hound from drowning but instead, he needed saving by Hound. The Autobot later revived the boy moments later. After the Decepticons' defeat, Spike revealed Optimus accepted a deal with the U.S. Government to offer sanctuary to the Autobots and later joined his newfound friends. (More Than Meets The Eye)

For months, there had been no enemy activity for Spike and the Autobots to all worry. One day while driving out with Jazz, Spike and the Autobot encountered a terrible traffic jam due to lights being blown out and they had to return to Autobot base. They alarmed Optimus, who investigated into it and with Teletraan's help determined the cause of the city's power outages. He had found footage that the Decepticons had indeed returned. Later that day, Spike accompanied Bumblebee for a recon mission. The boys discovered the Decepticons were trying to build a space bridge and return to Cybertron (as well as seeing Megatron for a second time). Before they were able to leave, Bumblebee (with Spike inside his cab) slipped off the cliff as Decepticons fired on them. However, the Decepticons were successful n making the space bridge work. From that point on, Bee and Spike became best friends from the experience.

Season 2[]

In 1985, Spike was unfortunately brutally wounded by Megatron, when the Decepticon fired on Bumblebee in his car form; in order to save his boy's life, Sparkplug transferred Spike's consciousness into an invention, Autobot X while others tried to work on Spike's human body. Unfortunately, it caused a confused Spike to attack his friends. Megatron used this to his advantage by mailed the Spike's Autobot consciousness to attack his former comerades. Optimus Prime even failed to subdue him until Spike accidentally hurt his father. By the end of the episode, Spike's body is healed and his consciousness is restored. Afterwards, Bumblebee came to his bedside as they comforted each other. (Autobot Spike)

Role in the comics[]

According to the IDW Comics, Spike's full name was Steven Witwicky, born in the 1970s. In some stories, Spike is an only child; while in other stories, Spike sometimes has a younger brother named Buster. He is either from a family of military men or mechanics. Spike is still married to Carly and they have a son, Daniel. His brother is married to a woman named Jesse and through them, Spike and Carly have a nephew.

Most of the time, Spike becomes best friends with Bumblebee and the Autobots until Spike and Buster blame the Cybertronian Civil War after their father is killed.

This version of Spike is frowned upon by the fandom.

Role in the live-action films[]

In the 2007 adaptation, a revamped version of Spike appears as Sam Witwicky, one of its main protagonists who was regarded as Spike's live-action. During the film's development, the creators considered to being Spike himself at one point but couldn't nickname it due to Sam and his dad not being mechanics like they are in the comics and cartoon. In the tie-in merchandise and material for the movies, Spike is later reiterated as Sam's cousin, where he also works in the military.

In Age of Extinctionand The Last Knight, Cade Yeager is nearly similar to Spike's adult self.

Trivia[]

  • Spike is one of the three characters to appear in all four seasons, an honor he shares with Bumblebee and Optimus Prime.
  • According to his official biography, Spike was 14 years old during the events of the first season.
  • In the live-action films, Sam Witwicky is often called "Spike" in other dubs.

References[]

  1. His origins are different in the cartoons; given he was fourteen years old by the time he met the Autobots in 1984, he was likely born in 1970.
