Never give up! At times like this, the only strength that matters is the strength in your heart.
―Soren giving Callum the strength to open the gates

Soren is the tritagonist of the 2018 Netflix fantasy animated series The Dragon Prince.

He is head of the elite Crownguard of Katolis and the youngest member of the group in Katolian history. He is the son of Lord Viren and Lissa, and the older brother of Claudia. Unlike his father and sister, Soren despises dark magic, instead choosing to be a swordsman of immense talent. He also had a vitriolic friendship with Callum, who he often bullied but also mentored (out of obligation).

In Book 3, Soren realizes how corrupted and far his father has gone and he aids the heroes. He becomes one of the members of Team Zym and dedicated himself to serving King Ezran and and even feared that Callum could fall into the same paths his father did. Two years after the Battle of the storm spire, Soren joined his friends on a new quest to prevent the liberation of Aaravos.

The Dragon Prince

Book 1

When Soren became the new head of the Crownguard, he made sure nothing happened to King Harrow. Soren later taught Callum sword fighting and let him win when Soren realized Callum had a crush on his sister. Receiving an urgent message from their father, Claudia and Soren meet Viren in his office, where he informs his children that eleven assassins have come to Xadia to kill the king. Having received information from Marcos the night before, Viren informs Soren that he will lead the first attack against the Moonshadow Elves, by using an Archangel Lunaris to lead the Crownguard to the camp. Soren asks if he means that they will kill the king and Viren shushes him, seeing Callum below. He warns Soren to practice discretion, lest he cause a panic. As Soren takes off on the mission, Callum approaches, telling him that he is coming too. However, Soren refuses to let the young prince come with the Crownguard because he’s still “just a kid.”

Upon entering the forest, Soren leads his men into the forest, with the moth in hand. He raises the chest containing the moon moth and sets it free. The moth swiftly takes flight, prompting him to instruct the group to follow it further into the woods. Soren searched high and low for the elusive elves, but his efforts were in vain as the elf leader had used a powerful spell called "Mystica-Arbora" to hide their whereabouts. Soren sarcastically commented that a magical moth was just as useless as a normal one. Soren releases the small creature, stating that they need to wait for the elves to come to them. He and his soldiers then mount their horses and ride off once more.

Soren was with King Harrow as he prepared for his inevitable end. After Callum, Ezran, and Rayla found the Dragon Prince's egg in Lord Viren's dungeons, the Trio decided to return the egg to his mother, the Dragon Queen, so that it would end the war. As they tightened security in the King's quarters, Harrow refused to allow Viren to use dark magic to save his life. Outside, Soren hesitated when Viren ordered his son and the guards to restrain the Prince. As Callum swore he would scream so his father would know what Viren had done, Viren took the boy's voice and called him ungrateful for being so spoiled. When the Moonshadow Elf assassins came, Soren pushed Callum behind him and then out of the way as an arrow headed toward them. He did everything he could to protect King Harrow, but they were not enough when King Harrow was murdered by Runaan.

Immediately afterward, his father, Lord Viren, sent him and his sister Claudia in search of Callum and Ezran. Viren wanted him to kill Callum and Ezran when they were found, but he kept this from Claudia. She later used dark magic to activate a tracking spell that would lead them to the princes and the rest of team Zym.

Book 2: Sky

The tracking spell led Claudia in Soren to the Moon Nexus, where they came across Rayla, who was doing a second round of patrol. Claudia began playing a small flute that put Rayla to sleep. The siblings approached the Elven girl, and Claudia urged Soren to finish her off. However, Soren thought that slaughtering Rayla in her sleep wasn't noble or sporting for his taste. Claudia reluctantly started playing the flute only for Rayla to suddenly bounce up and push Soren away from her. The young elf revealed that she stayed awake by poking a moon rose thorn in her thumb. With that out of the way, Rayla and Soren engaged in a one-on-one battle with each other before Callum rushed in to stop them.

The siblings proceed to find a way to bring the princes back home, even with Soren claiming that the boys' father is still alive and wants them to come home. He also struggled to follow his dad's orders to take out the princes so Soren plans to make it look like an accident. His first attempt was to create a zipline for Zym and Ezran to ride down on. Soren sees a loose screw, and Rayla caught him in the act when she sees the zipline and makes him ride on it. His first attempt falls and Soren is forced to ride down on it and fix the screw loss.

Despite Claudia trying the tactic of using friendlier methods, Soren convinced her they had to take the two princes home by force. They pretend to join the team on their quest to end the war between human and magic kingdoms. However, Rayla, Ellis, and Ava create illusionary versions of Callum, Ezran, and Azymondias, only for Soren and Claudia to fail in their mission to capture the princes. Fortunately, Team Zym escapes on Phoe-Phoe and Corvus frees them from Claudia and Soren's grasp. The two then arrest Corvus, calling him a traitor.

The siblings and their captive make it to a town where it is being intimidated by Pyrrah, a young dragon. He decided to bring the young dragon down. After Soren provoked Pyrrah, she started firing at others. Soren set Corvus free so he could help innocent civilians. When Soren's plan backfired, Claudia brought Pyrrah down with Griffin's eye. Claudia and Soren see the Moonshadow elf, Rayla, there to defend the dragon as her responsibility to be the daughter of two Dragon guards. However, Soren mocks the girl for her unnecessary heroics. Fortunately, Callum uses dark magic by literally taking a page out of Claudia's spell book and freeing Pyrrah from her chains. When Soren sees Rayla Trying to get the dragon to move, he holds her at sword point and starts mocking her for saving a dead dragon. However, Pyrrah awakens and seeks revenge on Soren for bringing her down. She throws him up against boulders, causing him to suffer from spinal damage, temporarily paralyzing him.

After Ezran and Zym show up, Pyrrah presumably recognizes the infant Dragon as the Dragon Prince and she subsequently leads. Claudia started to cast a dark magic spell that would capture Ezran and Zym but Soren called to her for help. Forced to choose between following her father's orders to capture the egg or saving Soren, Claudia chooses the latter. At the hospital, despite his paralysis, Soren takes comfort in this because it means he won't have to go after the princes like his father ordered him to.

Later Claudia fully healed her brother from his paralysis. by sacrificing a baby deer, much to his horror. After leaving the hospital, Soren tells Claudia that they both failed their missions

Book 3: Sun

Later, he and Claudia were arrested for being involved in Viren's conspiracy, but they did not end up in a dungeon.

Personality

Back in his earlier years, Soren used to be a carefree and loving child who loved both of his parents and Claudia dearly. There was also a time when his father was a happy man and cared for both Claudia and Soren equally, enough for Viren to find ways to save his son when he was a sickly child. However, after Lissa left the family, Viren grew lonely and embittered, even starting to mentally abuse Soren by favoring Claudia over him. Even then Soren didn't have a rivalry with Claudia over this; in fact, they were quite loving towards each other. As a result, Soren is a prideful individual, always liking compliments that people give him, he also can make dumb decisions due to his pride. However, he later grows out of this as he grows older.

It's revealed that the reason why he bullied Callum was that he feels jealous of his relationship with his stepfather Harrow, due to him having a healthy and kind relationship unlike his abusive one with Viren, who manipulates and emotionally abuses him and treats his sister Claudia with more affection. In the two years time skip, Soren is on better terms with Callum and while he calls him nicknames like "Step Mage," it's done out of teasing rather than out of malice Image Soren free.png|left|thumb]] Soren would later rescue Ezran after he was imprisoned and helped in the battle against Viren's army, defecting from his side after understanding that he was on the wrong side. His sense of morals is shown to now matter a lot to him, as he refuses to allow his father to kill Ezran and "kills" Viren to save the latter (although it was later revealed that it was an illusion made by Claudia), which he immediately regretted it, but he understood that he needed to be stopped due just how awful he was.

During the Team's adventure, Soren has become considerably wiser, as he warms Callum the temptation of magic when he sees him obsessing over the same mirror Lord Viren once did. He also tried giving Rayla advise on her relationship with Callum, even telling her how Callum felt isolated during her absences. However his advise is still misguided due to Rayla getting confused by his advice.

Powers and Abilities

Unlike his father and sister, Soren doesn't use dark magic due to his negative feelings towards it.

  • Skilled Combatant: As the causing of the Crownguard, Soren is well versed in single combat and able to lead those his command to battle. His skills are highly noticeable because of Soren's status as the youngest Crownguard in Katolis History. He went to great lengths to defend King Harrow and fight off the assassins as long as he could.
  • Swordsmanship: As the Captain of the Crownguard, Soren is also one of the greatest swordsmen in the Dragon Prince universe. Soren was even appointed to teach Callum how to swordfight. However, he sometimes underestimates his opponents, as seen when he was fighting Rayla. Despite Soren claiming that knocking someone off the ground by swiping a sword underneath their feet, Rayla tried to use the move on him during their fight in Book because it worked for her when she incapacitated several guards in the second episode. When he dueled with Rayla 2 years later when she and Runaan were trying to escape, Soren was able to keep up with her this time and use a bread stick once she disarmed him.
  • Skilled Strategist/Tactician: Despite being labeled a goof, Soren is talented on the battlefield and tactics. In Book 2, he knew to ask for a city's heavy, anti-siege weapon. However, Soren's plan to take down the dragon, Pyrrah, went wrong when he provoked her to attack, even though Pyrrah was merely flying over to intimate the townsfolk. In the events that followed, Soren and Claudia's attempts to fight Rayla and retrieve the dragon failed. Callum performed a dark magic spell to free Pyrrah from her chains and knocked Soren into a rock, causing him to suffer from paralysis until Claudia healed him. In Book 3, Soren devised a plan to smuggle Ezran and Bait out of Katolis. However, Ezran disagreed with the past of Soren's plan to put them in a burlap sack and instead suggested Soren smuggle them in a nearby hay cart instead.
  • Expert Equestrian: Soren owns a horse that he rides. In Book 4, Soren shows his horsemanship when he rides a dragon, Squeaky and they escape.

Equipment

  • Sword: Soren's main choice of weapon which he has become accustomed to wielding since he developed it an interest in Swordsmanship over magic in sorcery like his father and sister. He used his sword for training with Callum and using his sword to at first cut the rope holding together Ezran's zip line before using its hilt to hammer a loose screw. He later used his sword during the Battle of the Storm Spire and when he was fighting Rayla in Book 7: Dark.

Quotes

Book 3

The Final Battle:

Soren: "So, like, I wanna say something to you. You know all those times I called you the step prince, or made fun of you, or knocked you down and stuff? - You remember that?"
Callum: "I do."
Soren: "Well, I’m sorry. It was wrong and I’m sorry for it. I think it was because even though the king was your stepdad, it was, it was so clear how much he loved you, and that made me feel jealous and upset. So, I picked on you, because I didn’t know any better. Also because you’re smaller and weaker."
Callum: "Oh, thanks I guess."
Soren: "And slower I forgot slower. So, should we, like, hug or something? You know, to seal the apology? Is that a thing?"
Callum: "Uh, I don't know if that's necessary—Oh!)"
―Soren apologizes to Callum about his mistreatment of him earlier before hugging him
Drop the staff, Father. It’s over. I am a Crown Guard, and he is the true king. I will do whatever is necessary to protect his life, because now I know what the right thing to do is.
―Soren swearing to protect King Ezran
