Sol Regem is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside the Startouch Elves) of the animated series The Dragon Prince, serving as the opening antagonist of Book One: Moon, the final antagonist of Book Two: Sky, the titular main antagonist of the Book Three: Sun episode "Sol Regem," a minor antagonist in Book 5: Ocean, a major antagonist in Book Six: Stars and a posthumous character in Book 7: Dark.
He is a powerful Sun Archdragon and the former King of the Dragons with a bitter hatred of humans. In Book 3, he was shamed by two lovers, human mage/prince, Callum of Katolis and Rayla of the Silvergrove. It is later revealed he was one of the major catalysts behind the villainy of the fallen Startouch Elf Aaravos, as he was responsible for ratting out Aaravos' daughter Leola to the Startouch Elves leaders of her teaching magic to humans, which led to her execution.
History[]
Background[]
Sol Regem was born as Anak Araw and was known as the Dragon Prince. Even in his youth, he had developed a hatred towards humanity, deeming them as lesser beings. One day, he witnessed Aaravos' daughter Leola granting magic to humans. Due to his hatred towards humanity, Anak Araw exposed Leola to the Startouch Elf Council, thus betraying Aaravos. This lead to the Startouch Elves deeming her as a threat for the cosmic order. Leola was executed and Aaravos was cast out of the heavens. This sparked Aaravos' hatred towards his own people, leading down to a dark path by gifting dark magic to humans and plotting revenge against Anak Araw.
In the ancient days, Sol Regem was said to have used his fire breath to create the Sun Primal Stones. 200 years before the division of Xadia, Sol Regem rose to power and became the King of the Dragons, with his era starting approximately 1200 years before birth of Azymondias. During his reign, Sol Regem became the venerated symbol of all that was beautiful and glorious about Xadia. The Sunfire Elves in particular revered Sol Regem, as they repeated the shape of his horns in their crowns, weapon designs, and architecture. They also named the Six Horns after him.
After his parents' or the previous ruler of all dragons' deaths, Sol became the new King of the Dragons. He later destroyed Viard and the great city of Elarion after learning their discovery of dark magic.
For unknown reasons, Sol Regem was either overthrown or retired. He was succeeded by Luna Tenebris. He became mates with another archdragon Aithne Solaire, but he inadvertently buried her alive in his blind fury, completely unaware that Aaravos provoked him. As her death haunted him for thousands of years, Sol Regem roamed the border between Xadia and the Human Kingdoms in his bitterness and hatred. He would permit those who wished to enter or leave Xadia to either pass or reject. However, Sol Regem never lets humans pass into Xadia, especially those who dabbled in dark magic.
Book 3: Sun[]
Book 5: Ocean[]
However, despite this, Karim managed to claim the Sun Seed thanks to his lover, Sunfire Elf general Miyana, who betrayed Queen Janai and her allies. With the seed now in his possession, this allowed Karim to put his plot into motion and heal Sol Regem.
Book 6: Stars[]
Karim, Pharos, and Miyana offered Sol Regem the Sun Seed along with a proposal to restore his eyesight. However, Sol Regem told them to use the Sun Seed to heal his wings instead and he would help them overthrow Janai.
Aaravos had taken control of Pharos's body and deceived Sol Regem into launching an assault on Katolis rather than assisting Karim's forces. Following this attack, Sol Regem sustained severe injuries and experienced a bitter confrontation with Aaravos in the Valley of Graves. Upon learning the truth regarding Aithne Solaire's destiny, an enraged Sol Regem consumed Pharos's remains before succumbing to his fury and immolating himself, leaving only his skeleton behind.

Trivia[]
- Sol Regem could be considered the overarching antagonist of the series as him seeing Leola perform dark magic and outing her to the Startouch elves lead to her execution and Aaravos' descent to villainy.
- Sol Regem is the second archdragon to have an episode named after him, preceding Avizandum ("Echoes of Thunder") and succeeded by Rex Igneous and Domina Profundis.
- Sol Regem is chronologically the first archdragon seen in the series.
- Sol Regem is the 2nd character with a disability, succeeded by Amaya (who was born deaf), and then Soren and Damian (who were both asthmatic. However he wasn't born with the disability but given it.
- Most fans empathized with Sol Regem's ordeals in Book Five: Ocean until it was revealed he was the reason for Aaravos' young daughter Leola's death, at least according to Aaravos in Book Six: Stars episode "Stardust."
- It was alleged that Leola was a unicorn who gave humans an orb until Book 6 revealed Sol Regem saw her teaching magic to a human girl instead.
- Sol Regem is the only present-day archdragon not featured on the memorial carving dedicated to the Archdragons in the Valley of Graves. This is because Avizandum, Zubeia, Rex Igneous and Domina Profundis all died heroes protecting Team Zym and their allies while Sol Regem died a villain who attacked Katolis and is the reason for most of the world's strife and pain in the series.
