- “Waterbending masters there are the best in the world. They can train you. So don't worry, kid. You don't have to do this alone. You have me, Katara, and a flying ball of fur. What more do you need?”
- ―Sokka to Aang
Sokka is the tritagonist of Netflix's 2024 live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender. He is the older brother of Katara and one of the two companions of Aang on his quest for him to master all four elements and bring an end to the Hundred Year War to stop the Fire Nation.
Background[]
Sokka was born sixteen years prior to the series to Chief Hakoda and Kya of the South Water Tribe. Two years later, his sister Katara was born and unlike his younger sister, Sokka was a non-bender. When Sokka was young, he and Katara grew up together and were close with their dad's best friend, Bato. At only thirteen years old Sokka managed to pass his trials of being a capable leader. However, when he left the rent, Sokka overheard Hakoda discussing with Bato how close his son came to failing. This greatly upset Sokka, who felt like his father didn't believe in him.During a fire nation raid, Katara and Sokka were left motherless after a soldier from the Fire Nation murdered their mother right in front of them after mistaking her for being a waterbender. Sokka was initially unaware of his mother's death until he found Katara.
Their father never remarried and three years prior to the series, Hakoda left to defend his home from the Fire Nation. Determined to prove himself, Sokka took it upon himself to protect the village and his younger sisterin Hakoda's absence.
Personality[]
Sokka is known for his humorous but brotherly nature and carrying around a set of boomerangs. He joins his sister and Aang on the quest to stop the militaristic Fire Nation.
As the eldest of the group, Sokka takes it upon himself to lead the other children in the village and protecting Katara and later Aang during their journey. However he has a deep personal hatred towards the fire nation due to one of the soldiers murdering their biological mother.

Differences from the source material[]
- Sokka's intiial age is sixteen instead of fifteen, presumably because a two-year age gap seems between him and his sister is more realistic than a one year gap. In the original show, Sokka and Katara were a year apart.
Relationships[]
Katara[]
Ever since their mother's death and their father going off to war, Sokka looks after his younger sister but he can be overprotective of her at times. He forbade her from publicly docs waterbending in public due to the fear that the Fire Nation could kill her if they ever found out and unwilling to let her be around Aang, especially when he went into the Avatar State and nearly knocked them off the mountain. However, their journey from Kyoshi Island to Omashu changes Sokka's perspectives. During the journey into the caves below Omashu, Sokka and Katara reconciled after a huge argument about her trusting rebel and extremist Jet. It was also their sibling love for each other that guided them out of the tunnels.
By the time they reached the North Pole, Sokka became confident in the young woman Katara is becoming and praised Katara for his sister's growing abilities. He also stopped Aang from interfering in Katara and Pakku's right because this was something his sister had to settle on her own.
Aang[]
When Sokka and Katara first discovered Aang, Sokka was afraid of him, even telling his sister to leave him on the ice bank. However, he is more than willing to abandon Aang to Zuko but he decided to save Aang after seeing the Avatar willingly surrendered to him and when Aang first entered the Avatar State, much to Katara's fury. However during his time on Kyoshi with the Kyoshi Warriors, Sokka promised that Aang isn't alone in his fight and that he has him, Katara and the rest of Team Avatar. In Omashu, Sokka and Katara both rescued Aang from his captors.
Overtime, Sokka and Aang became very close friends, up to the point where Aang wanted to save Katara and Sokka from Koh the Face Stealer and Sokka became just as protective of Aang as he did Katara, as both he and Katara came to see Aang as family and an honorary younger brother.
In "The North," Sokka stops Aang from interfering in Katara's fight with Pakku, with Aang reluctantly backing down. The siblings also reestablish their loyalty to Aang and still stand by his side defending the North from Fire Nation invaders, also showing that Sokka won't abandon his friend in his time of need like he did before. In the aftermath of the battle, Sokka and Katara told Aang that losses in battle is what war is about and none of it is his fault. Katara and Aang then proceed to joke with Sokka.
Kya[]
Kya was Sokka's mother who he lost to Southern Raiders when they were searching for all the Waterbenders.
Momo[]
Suki[]
Princess Yue[]
Zuko[]
Sokka first encountered Zuko when he decide to challenge Zuko for one-on-one fight. However, Sokka was easily outmatched and almost gotten himself burned alive until Aang steps in to protect Sokka from the Fire Prince's wrath. Their enmity is both from the fact that Zuko is hunting Aang for selfish reasons and how Sokka is one of the Avatar's protectors.
Sokka admits to Katara that Zuko is dangerous in his pursuit and hunt for Aang. He also finds it unbelievable that Aang and Zuko formed some kind of connection that will play a vital role in the series.

Trivia[]
- Sokka's initial sexism and prejudice towards women is taken out of the show's context. Due to this fans are outraged by this because Sokka overcoming sexism was part of his character development. However his attitude towards Katara is more reasonable, given that he isn't sexist of his sister, just protective of her.
- This was one of the many criticism from the fans who believed that this was pivotal for Sokka's character arc. However, a small amount of fans actually appreciate this gesture for some reason, likely respecting how his apprehension for Katara showcasing her waterbending is more of his brotherly protection of her over being a woman.
