According to The Transformers comic book released by Marvel Comics, Sideswipe and his twin brother, Sunstreaker, were part of Optimus Prime's initial crew of the Ark.  Four million years ago, the Ark was attacked by Decepticon forces, causing the ship carrying Sideswipe and the rest of the Autobots to crash-land into a volcano on Earth. The Autobots remained in stasis for several millennium, until the dormant volcano housing their ship erupted, and Sideswipe and the other Cybertronians.
