Sidney "Sid" Phillips is the main antagonist of the 1995 Disney•Pixar animated film Toy Story. He was the evil neighbor kid of Andy Davis, who unlike his neighbor did not treat his toys with love and care and instead did extremely horrid things to them, until he learned to his horror, that the toys were alive, which gave him such a fright that he vowed to change his ways.

Biography[]

Toy Story[]

Sid is introduced as Andy Davis' next-door neighbor (until Andy moves out near the end of the film), an 11-year-old boy who takes pleasure in destroying toys. He is first seen when Andy's toys, especially Woody and Buzz Lightyear, watch him destroy a Combat Carl action figure, blowing him up. Buzz at first mistakes him for his chewing dog Scud, until Woody and the others explain that Sid tortures toys for fun. While Woody and Buzz are at Pizza Planet, Sid is also there playing a game and is frustrated that he has lost it. He then goes to the Crane game, which Woody got into to get Buzz out and return him to Andy, and immediately picks up an Alien with the Crane. At that moment, Sid sees Buzz Lightyear inside the machine, and captures him, until he finds Woody attached to him, who was holding onto his feet in a failed attempt to save him. Sid proudly calls this "double prize", and takes the now-captured toys back to his house. Upon reaching his house, Sid gives Scud the alien he got from Pizza Planet, who proceeds to roughly destroy the toy, much to Woody and Buzz's horror. He then snatches her sister Hannah's Janie doll, taking her to his room. He removes her head to give her a "double-bypass brain transplant" with the head of a toy Pterodactyl, putting her in the body of the Janie doll. Seeing his doll transformed, Hannah freaked out and went to tell her mother, while Sid claimed that Hannah was lying. So, Woody tries to escape in fear, but since the door has locks, he can't. He discovers that Sid has taken so many toys apart and combined them, much to his horror. Buzz, still thinking he was a Space Ranger, tries to call Star Command to send them reinforcements.

The next day, Sid tortures Buzz (offscreen) and Woody, subjecting the latter to "interrogation" while he finds ways to make him talk. He opens the window and lets the hot sunlight focus on Woody's forehead, slowly burning him. Sid continues to torture him until his mother calls him for breakfast, so Sid leaves his room. Later, Woody discovers that the Toy Mutants are good as they repaired Buzz's previously broken left arm. Just then, Sid returns to his room, carrying a rocket that he mail-ordered, intending to blow up a toy for fun. He thought of blowing up Woody, but he couldn't find him since he had managed to hide from Sid. Instantly, Sid discovers Buzz on the floor, picks him up, and gets the idea to blow him up. Sid immediately connects the rocket to Buzz as Woody watches in horror. However, when a storm sweeps through the neighborhood, Sid has to cancel the launch, much to his chagrin and Woody's relief. He puts it off until the next day and then goes to sleep. During the night, Woody and Buzz patch things up, where Woody teaches Buzz how great it is to be a toy, and together they plan to escape from Sid's house, just before Andy and his family move out. When Sid wakes up and is ready to blow Buzz up, Woody teams up with all the Mutant toys to rescue Buzz before it's too late. They come up with a plan to end Sid's abuse of toys for good. Soon after, after distracting his dog Scud, Woody and the toys arrive in the backyard, where Sid is about to carry out his plan. Sid sees Woody on the floor, and puts him on the grill, planning to roast him later. Before Sid can achieve his goal, Woody starts talking to him. While he confronts Sid about his treatment of the toys, the latter slowly begins to grow scared. Other toys show up to confront Sid, who is now terrified. Woody then advises him to take good care of his toys from now on, because if he doesn't, they'll find out, and eventually the cowboy comes to life telling Sid to "play nice". This is enough for Sid, who screams in horror and runs to his house. Sid is eventually tormented by Hannah, who uses her Sally doll as a weapon to scare her brother, having discovered his new fear of toys. Sid runs scared up the stairs, afraid that Hannah's doll will come to life as well. This allows Woody and Buzz to run away from Sid's house to catch up with Andy's family, who were moving out of their old house.

Toy Story 3[]

After his past experiences with the toys, Sid grew out of his "bad boy" phase. By the time he was an adult, Sid became a garbage man. This article or section is a stub. You can help by expanding it.

Personality[]

Sid is portrayed as Andy's cruel and sociopathic neighbor (until the latter moves out at the end of the film) whose idea of fun is destroying and torturing toys. He never takes good care of his toys, often using them for stunts and even explosions. Sid also enjoys bullying and tormenting his younger sister Hannah, taking her dolls and removing their heads to replace them with other toys as part of his "experiment" Sid has a twistedly creative side when it comes to art, which is shown in the scene where he mixes the "Mutant Toys" with other toys. He even has a good command of tools and explosives for his age. This also makes him indirectly responsible for the deaths of various toys that had to go through his abuse. However, despite this, Sid was unaware that the toys were alive, until near the end of the film, where they come to life and scare him. After finding out, Sid immediately stopped hurting the toys and had to swear that he would treat them better. In his adulthood, Sid remained mostly the same, (especially his love of metal music) and has become a garbage collector, which implies that he is no longer a juvenile delinquent. It is unknown if he is still traumatized due to the toys being alive or if he managed to get over those thoughts.

Trivia[]

  • Sid is the absolute opposite reflection of Andy:
    • Children who are next door neighbors
    • They both have sister's but Andy is nice to his sister Molly while Sid bullied his sister.
    • Andy is a good normal kid and Sid is a delinquent,
    • Both have pet dogs (Scud and Buster). However the difference is Scud is abusive to his owners toys while Buster actually befriends Woody
    • They enjoyed going to pizza planet
    • Andy retires his childhood lifetime of toy playing while Sid quits his childhood of toy destroying mutilation. Also they both seem quite content with their lives as an adult, as Sid seems quite content with being a garbage worker and Andy goes off to college.
  • He is the only confirmed human to know that toys actually come alive, with Molly being put up for debate.
  • He was one of the few characters who didn't return in Toy Story 4, along with Andy and his family and where he didn't appear in any capacity.
  • The toys coming to life possibly scared Sid, leading him to no longer mutate his toys and collect them instead.
  • The scene where Sid demands Woody tell him the location of a rebel base parodies the scene in Star Wars: A New Hope where Grand Moff Tarkin demands Princess Leia reveal the location of the rebel base.
  • Some people have pointed out that the reason behind Sid's sociopathic nature was probably because of a bad home life, especially when it came to his parents. It is implied that his mother was probably negligent when it came to Sid, such as allowing him to play with explosives and letting him skateboard to Pizza Planet all by himself without any legal guardians. There are hints that his alcoholic father may have been abusive, as the massive amount of locks on Sid's bedroom door were probably put in to escape away from his dad's abuse. The scene where Scud pursues Woody and Buzz throughout the hall until he stops and retreats at the sight of Sid's sleeping father suggests that Scud may have had some awful experiences with him as well.
