Samuel "Sam" Baines is a minor character in the Back to the Future franchise. He was the father of Lorraine Baines-McFly, and her siblings, maternal grandfather of Dave, Linda and Marty McFly and great-grandfather of Marty Jr. and Marlene.

History[]

Original timeline[]

In the original 1955, Sam accidentally hit George with his car after George falls out of a tree "bird watching." Stella invited George over for dinner and Lorraine, feeling sorry for him, asked George out at the Enchantment Under the Sea dance. The two ended up falling in love and marrying.

Back to the Future, Part I[]

In the film, Sam accidentally hits a time-traveling Marty McFly with his car after he pushes his father George out of the way. Sam yelled to Stella that another "one of those damned kids ran in front of his car" and asked her to help him get Marty into the house.  After Marty regained consciousness, he found himself in his mother's bedroom and met a younger version of Lorraine. He and Lorraine came down the steps, where Sam continued to try and fix the TV he just bought. As Sam started to scold Marty for running into the middle of the street Stella scolded Sam to knock it off. They invited Marty over to dinner, where Sam found Marty's behavior strange, especially when he mentioned "John F Kennedy and mentioned that he had seen a TV show The Honeymooners already even though it was a brand new release.

After Marty gained instruction on how to get to Emmett Brown's house from Sam, he quickly left when Lorraine started giving him wanted advances, such as saying he could stay in her room and by the way she was touching him from underneath the dinner table. Marty quickly left the table and told his family that he would see them "much much later" as he closed the door.  Stella noted that Marty was a very strange man and Sam added that the boy was an idiot and assumed that the parents were probably too. He also told Lorraine that if she ever had a kid who acted like that he would disown her.

Trivia[]

Marty's final on-screen remark to Sam, "I will see you later, much later", suggests that the entire family was still alive in 1985 and Marty was introduced to a younger version of his grandparents and his maternal aunts and uncles.

The part where Sam yells to his wife, Stella, after he hits Marty with his car was a reference to the 1947 play A Streetcar Named Desire.

Originally, Sam was to make another appearance in the early draft of the second movie, set in 1967, when Marty again has dinner with the Baines family.
