ā€œThe dragonspawn were famous for losing their minds. It was the price they paid for centuries of keeping the bloodlines pure. And Aerys more than happily continued the "noble" sister-fucking tradition of his forefathers.ā€
―Robert Baratheon

Queen Raehella Targaryen is a minor character in the TV series, Game of Thrones. She was the granddaughter of Aegon V Targaryen and Betha Blackwood, the daughter of Jaehaerys II Targaryen, the sister-wife of Aerys II Targaryen AKA the Mad King, the mother of Viserys Targaryen, Rhaegar Targaryen and Daenerys Targaryen, and in the TV series, the mother-in-law of Lyanna Stark and the biological paternal grandmother of Jon Snow.

History[]

Books[]

Rhaella was born in the King's Landing to Jaehaerys II and his wife. She was forced into a loveless marriage between her and brother Aerys. It is said that one time when Jaime Lannister was on guard at their door he was horrified at the thought of king Aerys rape Rhaella and was sad he couldn't do anything to stop it, while the other Kingsguard refused to intervene.

After the death of Rhaegar in the Battle of the Trident, and the murders of her daughter-in-law Elia Martell and her children, Aegon and Rhaenys, Rhaella and Prince Viserys fled to the Targaryen ancestral seat of Dragonstone. Aerys would perish during the Sack of King's Landing, while Rhaella died giving birth to Daenerys during a great storm.
