Randy Cunningham is the title main protagonist of Disney XD's television series Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja. He is a ninth-grader who is an unlikely hero with a superhuman ninja suit, the NinjaNomicon. Randy uses the suit and help from his best friend, Howard, to battle evil while trying to survive high school and guard his secret identity.

Powers and Abilities[]

The Ninja Suit possesses the ability to bestow its users with extraordinary skills befitting of a genuine ninja. This includes heightened strength, agility, reflexes, speed, fighting abilities, durability, stamina and materialization for combat. It also allows the ninja to camouflage, escape, or trick his enemies during a fight. The suit contains many magical powers and abilities such as Art of Healing, Ninja Rage, Earth Attack, Hydro Hand, and Air Fist. The suit also can bring out objects out from the suit or use the object even without bringing it up. The NinjaNomicon holds the secrets to unraveling the suit's true potential.

  • Tengu Control: The suit can also control an ancient bird demon known as the Tengu. This is because the bird and mask are link, this was shown in Randy Cunningham: 13th Century Ninja, where Randy controlled the Tengu before he entered the Ninja Rage state. The Ninja Rage and the link to the demon allows Randy to share the fire powers with the demon bird. It seems Randy is only able to control the demon bird when the bird is possessing someone. Since the Tengu and The Ninja are linked Randy can feel the pain the Tengu gets and vise verse. Randy has also shown to control the demon bird without the use of the Ninja Rage, making the bird fight and then infusing the bird with fire powers.
  • Super Strength: The strength of the Ninja Suit seems to varies, while at times granting the Ninja great strength such as overpowering the Shark-Dermanator but has difficulty in carrying an arcade game machine, a heavy shelf. Implying that the suit can not maintain it's strength at a constant level for a long period of time and allows only short strong bursts of strength.
  • Ninja Rage: a power gained by the Ninja to become ignited and use fire powers. When in Ninja Rage, the Ninja Suit's colors are reversed and ignites on fire. The Ninja's eyes also turn red as the surrounding area becomes black. The newly colored suit gives fire-based attacks to the Ninja, which can spawn from his hands and set the Ninja Sword ablaze. The user is able to generate a destructive ball of red flames that deals heavy damage on impact. It can be conjured from either hand. This ability also allows weapons or tools to be set aflame and hence become stronger. Only Randy's sword has been seen on fire. He can also turn objects such as musical instruments into a flamethrower-type of weapon which can shoot out a blast of flames, even preform rapid fire and a continuous stream of fire-like energy attacks as seen in "Unstank My Hart."
  • Earth Attack: Using a spell, it allows the Ninja to summon whatever he wants out of soil to protect him. When the creation is too broken apart, it can't pull itself together. The Ninja can control the Earth Attack and command the earth to follow his orders. Randy creates sand ninjas, which he calls sandjas. Together, they attack the worm, but can't break it apart enough. In order to defeat it, Randy commands the sandjas to do a cyclone attack, in which they turn into a cyclone and break the worm completely. He later created Mudballs which were a rapid fire attack made from the muddy ground and were used against stanked Jason Myers. Randy created swirling streams of black tinted energy with glowing red outlines in his hands while using an incantation and then spread it to the ground. Multiple balls of mud levitated off the ground and then shot at rapid speed at Stanked Jason Myers and pushed him a few feet back.
  • Hydro Hand: This move is similar to the Air Fist, as it allows the user to shoot a hand made of water. The ability is powerful enough to douse the Tengu Fireball. It's shown in "Happy Hunakkah, Howard Weinerman" that the hydro hand can immediately turn into solid ice, as Randy used it to make the floor slippery escape a robot and he also used it so he could move an arcade game with ease with combination of Air Fist.
  • Air Fist: A power the Ninja can learn to conjure a blast of air and use it to strike enemies. This attack has a long range, and it can be shaped without fist-shaped gesture. It can be be used horizontally for width and vertically for power and height range. The steps and the time to form it can be almost instant or take a while. The move is strong enough to pierce through solid stone and metal. The move is also useful when the Ninja needs to deal a finishing blow or to defend thing(s). Randy is able to use it defensively and offensively, but even though it is powerful, Randy uses it infrequently. This is arguably Randy’s secondary signature attack as he used it more than the other Ninja Abilities (besides the Ninja Rage).
  • Art of Healing: A special Ninja technique that allows the Ninja to restore life to the lifeless, thus bringing the dead to life. It can also be used to grow living beings when the The Stunk Pine seed grew.
  • Art of Disguise: The Ninja can change and alter their physical hair growth by focusing their ninja energy. If they loose control, the energy will master the Ninja, like major hair growth. It can be used in combat to fight, even if the Ninja can't move at all because it just requires focus. It's likely that this ability isn't just limited to just hair, as the Nomicon demonstrated this ability by showing him a face of a man who was constantly changing certain facial features such as eyes, nose and mouth. Implying that the Ninja can change his entire physical appearance, and achieve Shapeshifting. This skill, Super Senses, and Earth Attack are currently the only 3 powers that Randy can use without wearing the Ninja Suit.
  • Super Senses: This ability heightens the Ninja's five senses allowing him to have a better scope of his environment and aid him in fights. This ability allows Randy to give an extremely in-depth analysis of the food his consumes, seeing a clear close up of a pimple popping, hear the scraping of a fork against a tongue, see the individual wing beats of a bumblebee. When used properly; The Ninja is able to chose which of his senses to enhance, as shown that he was able to focus his smelling to determine how many days an article of clothing has been worn and was able to block attacks with his eyes closed. Similar to the Art of Disguise, if the user loses control or focus the ability, their senses enhance to the point of overwhelming the user.
  • Halloweenja: The Halloweenja can use an orange stank-like mist that travels to the nearest inanimate objects and/or people to turn them into monsters, often pertaining to what they look like or what they're dressed up as. However, the Halloweenja is a difficult power to control. The suit can become conscious and spit out the user of the suit. With its mist, it can control its transformed minions and desires to attack and cause mayhem. The Halloweenja has no effect on things that are cute. If its minions are hugged or in contact with anything adorable, they revert back to normal. Also, the only way to completely get rid of the essence of terror from the suit is to open the NinjaNomicon nearby, which sucks up the terror.

Equipment[]

  • NinjaNomicon: It is an 800-year-old semi-sentient book that teaches the Ninja wisdom and skills. It teaches Randy lessons and gives him info/gives him advice on how to deal with an enemy or a problem. It holds precognitive abilities, chooses who can can and can't open it, only lets the true Ninja use its knowledge, holds a section on the Forbidden Knowledge of the Shadow Warrior. When Randy opens it, it connects and communicates with Randy mentally by putting him in a trance. According to Mac Antfee almost anything is possible inside it.
  • Ninja Mask: Woven from Tengu feathers, it materializes the Ninja Suit giving him all the ninja abilities. Only the chosen Ninja could wear it, as the person must have the heart of a ninja. When Randy puts it on the red lines glow and entangle him, forming the ninja suit. The mask can reform itself after being destroyed as in "Evil Spirit Week" it reforms from five creatures can be seen (nine in the storyboard): the tengu, a carp, the twin baku, and a wani (dragon) and made more Tengu feathers. The mask is made portable and can be hidden easily. If the Ninja abuses his powers, the mask will not turn into the suit when he puts it on until he unabuses them. This

  • Ninja Balls: Small balls the Ninja can use to fight his enemies, like tripping balls and hot balls.
  • Ninja Bow Staff: it acts as a normal bow staff used to hit your enemies.
  • Ninja Chain Blade: A single blade on a chain to attack from a distance.
  • Ninja Chain Sickle: A long chain with a sickle at the end. Randy often uses this weapon to kill multiple opponents at once or to use it against large enemies to hit them from afar. This is the second weapon Randy uses in the Title Sequence.
  • Ninja Duel Blade: A strange duel blade that when opened is difficult to use but great in battle.
  • Ninja Eskrima: Twin-shaped weapon that used to block and counter attacks.
  • Ninja Hand Drill: Used to drill into openings the ninja cannot get into.
  • Ninja Kaginawa: Two hooks that are used to grapple opponents or objects.
  • Ninja Kamas: Twin, mini-scythes that are used to throw against the enemy.
  • Ninja Manrikigusari: Twin-shaped weapon with a long chain.
  • Ninja Ring: A disk-shaped weapon that is used as a shuriken.
  • Ninja Sai: A dagger-shaped weapon with two cured prongs helps to block, stab, and pin the enemies.
  • Ninja Scarf: The Ninja Scarf is similar to a grappling hook which the Ninja can use to swing from one place to another place, or to grab his opponent.
  • Ninja Spikes: A retractable weapon that can be used for punching, kicking, climbing, and sneaking.
  • Ninja Sword: A sword that the Ninja can use. The sword can also be dual used, using two swords at once. This is Randy's most used and, according to S. Ward Smith, the Ninja's swordsmith, his most powerful weapon if used properly. This is the first weapon that Randy uses in the title sequence.
  • Smoke-Bomb: A useful bomb for the Ninja to appear and disappear with. Once in a while, the Ninja will have to restock them using the Skunk Pine.
  • Ninja Spikes: They are used to help keep the Ninja grounded when being pulled or to climb walls.
  • Ninja Tonfa: they are used to help the ninja break objects or dodge attacks.

Weaknesses[]

  • Overconfident: Randy usually, but not always, taunts or look down on his enemies which sometimes causes him to lose a battle like when he fought against the Mexican Death Bear. This condition has improved and been toned down in more recent episodes.
  • Easily Distracted: Randy is often, though not always distracted by Howard and his wants allowing his enemies escape or attack more. This happened as Howard texted him, and where he is RECEIVING a call from Howard. In some recent episodes, however, Randy is more focused, ignoring the distractions most of the TIME.
  • Alektorophobia - Randy has alektorophobia, which is a fear of chickens and roosters. The presence of chickens and/or roosters causes extreme uneasiness, anxiety, and fear, which paralyzes Randy enough for the opponents to get an upper hand. Even though Randy is scared of the latter, he knows a large amount of disturbing facts about them, which goes to the point that he will cry out of distress and terror. He embraces his fear and temporarily manages to cooperate with a giant rooster, but he still shows sign fear of them. The origins of Randy's alektorophobia is unknown.
