I am about to revolutionize the scaring industry, and when I do, even the great James P. Sullivan is gonna be working for me.
―Randall Boggs

Randall Boggs is the main antagonist of the Disney's Monsters, Inc. franchise.

He is a snide and vindictive, he's notoriously envious and hostile of James P. Sullivan, his arch-nemesis and the most beloved scarer in Monstropolis. To make his mark on the world while simultaneously stealing Sullivan's spotlight, Randall plots to "revolutionize" the scaring industry using conspiratorial means that involves kidnapping human children.

Biography

Monsters Inc.

Randall is a Scarer who works at Monsters Incorporated, where monsters enter children's rooms through a door system and scare sleeping children so their screams will energy the company. He always competes against James P. Sullivan and Mike Wazowski for the "Top Scarer" puest, as Randall aims to break the record for scares. However, he loses to Sullivan every time and comes in second place.  Sullivan is also the best Scarer and is well-liked by the company, which makes Randall feel great hatred and jealousy towards Sulley. He has an assistant named Fungus, a three-eyed monster, but their relationship is not good as Randall is easily irritated with Fungus and bosses him around too much. One day, in the Scarer plant, Randall briefly won first place, but was then overtaken again by Sullivan, much to his anger. He menacingly ordered Fungus to bring another door into his station, otherwise he would throw him through the shredder.

However, Randall has created in his secret hideout (located in a sector of the company), a machine called "The Scream Extractor", with which he plans to extract the childs screams to revolutionize the scare industry to reach the top and earn the respect of Monstropolis. When a human girl named Boo enters Monstropolis through a door, Randall plans to kidnap her and use the machine on her, so he starts searching the entire plant for her, to no avail as Sullivan successfully hid her and kept her under his protection after discovering Randall's plan.

As the girl is searched throughout Monstropolis for being considered toxic, Randall eventually suspects that Mike was involved in letting Boo into Monstropolis and talks him into putting the girl back on hers doorstep, though this is all a lie by Randall to to be able to take the girl to his machine.

However, Randall mistakenly captures Mike and takes him to his secret hideout. Mike thinks that Randall is cheating to get the scares record, though the lizard reveals his true plans to revolutionize the company and make everyone (including Sullivan) work for him.  Randall then tries to use the machine on Mike, but it doesn't work. When Randall finishes fixing a breakdown, he discovers that Mike had been saved by Sulley.

When Mike and Sullivan escape, they decide to tell Randall's evil plans to the CEO company, Henry J. Waternoose. However, Waternoose is actually secretly in league with Randall, and instead of returning the girl, he puts a door in the station that isn't Boo's, at this moment Randall appears and opens the door.  Waternoose banishes Sullivan and Mike to the Himalayas, and both he and Randall go along with their plan, kidnapping Boo.

However, Randall and Waternoose have a disagreement when the President gets mad at Randall, since he had to expel Sullivan for him.  Randall doesn't seem to care, as he mentioned that Sulley got what he deserved.  When Waternoose said that Sullivan was doing what Randall could never do, the latter is furious. Before Randall can accomplish his plan, Sullivan returns from exile, destroys Randall's machine and frees Boo. Randall attacks Sullivan on Waternoose's orders, hitting him with several Scare cans and strangling him nearly to death, stating that he has wanted to do this for a long time. However, Mike shows up and saves Sulley, knocking out Randall in the process.

Randall chases the trio to the plant, and then to the door factory, which moves all the doors into the air. During the chase, Sullivan, Mike and Boo try to get rid of Randall, but he manages to steal the girl and takes her away. However, Sullivan sets out to rescue Boo, but Randall pushes him out the door and is about to drop him and send him to his death. However, Boo overcomes her fear of the lizard, and defends Sullivan by repeatedly hitting Randall in the head with a bat. Randall is later thrown through one of the factory gates, and ends up banished to the human world, where he is brutally beaten with a shovel by a human lady. Mike and Sullivan then destroy the door he was thrown through to make sure he doesn't return.

Monsters University.

That's the last time I lose to you Sullivan!
―Randall swearing revenge against Sullivan for beating him at the Scare Games.

Randall reappears in the prequel Monsters University, being nicknamed "Randy". There, he is a shy and kind teenager monster who enrolls in Monsters University to study scares, just like Mike. Mike is asigned to room 319, and Randall greets him amicably when they meet, and the two become roommates and best friends. During their talk, Randall reveals that he is afraid of showing his invisibility in class because they would make fun of him, showing that he has insecurities in controlling his camouflage powers. Randall also wants to be accepted by the "cool kids" in college due to his desire to be popular. He also wore purple glasses, although he got rid of them on Mike's recommendation to can control his camouflage.

One night, Randall tries to serve cupcakes at a college frat party to get more friends. However, Mike (who was Sulley's enemy at the time) chases after the mascot of Fear Tech, a rival university, and accidentally spills some of Randall's cupcakes on the way, staining him all over his face and embarrassing him.

Randall later helps Mike study for the final Scare exam by asking him improvised questions about fears, which Mike answers with ease.

As the Scare Games approach, Randall eventually joins Roar Omega Roar, the most popular fraternity on campus, to participate in the events, instead of joining Oozma Kappa with Mike. Randall denies Mike help, and decides to stay in the ROR to fulfill his dream of popularity. This causes his friendship with Mike to slowly decline due to Randall's actions. Finally, Randall participates with the ROR in a prank on Oozma Kappa that humiliates Mike and his team in front of the entire university, ending his friendship with Mike for good.

During the final game, Randall competes against Sullivan in a Scare simulator, where they both have to scare a doll in the form of a boy. Randall uses his invisibility to scare the doll, but Sullivan ruins his camouflage by letting out a louder roar, causing Randall to fall on a carpet of hearts and end up covered in them. Despite giving the roar, Randall gets a low score and loses to Sullivan. When he comes out of the simulator, the ROR's are angry for his failure and kick him out of their fraternity. After this, Randall looks at Oozma Kappa and furiously swears that he will never lose to Sullivan again.

Since this moment, Randall begins his descent into villainy as he develops his hatred towards Sulley and Mike, and slowy but surely, he becomes their new enemy, leading to all the events of Monsters Inc.

Monsters at Work

Randall returns tot he real world thanks to John Worthington. Together, they stole laugh energy from Monsters, Inc. and passed it off as their own scream power for Fear Co. He even rewired the empty canisters to give false readings, so no one would notice the missing laugh energy. He also stole Mike's lucky mitt, sugar packets, and Boo's drawing and vandalized the laugh floor with paint from the hardware store owned by Tylor Tuskmon's family and planted the stuff in Tylor’s locker to frame him for the crimes.

After Johnny and Randall's arrest, Randall escapes custody and remains on the run.

Personality

Randall is a cruel, selfish, greedy, competitive and bad-tempered monster who thinks of obtaining the record for scares so he can be the #1 scarer of Monsters Incorporated. Because he always loses to Sullivan, his envy and jealousy consume him, making him very hateful towards Sulley and Mike. He is also an awful boss towards his assistant Fungus, constantly ordering him around and showing no respect to him. At one point, he threatens to put Fungus down the shredder just for not being fast enough to get doors for him.

Randall was also shown to be very cold and evil in nature, as he plans to kidnap human children and extract their screams from them with his "Scream Extractor", in order to revolutionize the company and become the leader, proving that he's willing to harm children and tortuting them (which possibly consists of suffocating them to death). The effects of his machine become clearer when it nearly suffocated Fungus, whose skin turned pale in the process. Even so, Randall showed no concern for his aide's well-being, casually ignoring the pain he felt after being subjected to the Scream Extractor. Randall also proves to be sadistic, painfully twisting Mike's arms to use them as clock hands while telling him how much time he has before returning Boo to her door (although this was all blackmail so he could kidnap the girl himself).

Randall is even capable of murdering Sullivan during their fight in their secret hideout, as he hit him with several Scare cans and tried to choke him to death, saying that he wanted to do this for a long time, and he would have succeeded if Mike didn't save Sulley by knocking out Randall with a snow cone. Also, when he helped Waternoose banish Mike and Sullivan once they figured out his plan, Randall showed a sadistic smile as he opened the door and saw Waternoose push them into the Himalayas. He also felt no pity for his enemies, leading Waternoose to reprimand him for his lack of morality. Randall is overall a far worse than Waternoose: While Waternoose is sincerely well-intentioned, (as he seeks to save Monstropolis from an energy crisis by preventing his company from going under) and was genuinely nice to Sullivan until he discovered his conspiracy, Randall only did it for pure personal gain, his hatred and resentment towards Mike and Sullivan, and his enjoyment of hurting children. Despite working with Waternoose, Randall shows no concern or consideration for him, and seems to get irritated whenever he is with him. This shows that he only works with Waternoose because it is convenient for his own goals.

However, Randall wasn't always like this: In the prequel Monsters University, he was shown to be a kind, shy, and nervous teenager who was best friends and roommates with Mike Wazowski during their time in college. Randall was also insecure about his powers and was afraid to use them in class, but Mike encouraged him to show his abilities and gave him confidence. However, when he got the chance to get into Roar Omega Roar, the best fraternity on campus, Randall refuses to help Mike and abandons him without a second thought, since he's with the cool kids. That leads Mike to ally with Sulley as they teamed up with Oozma Kappa for the Scare Games. He then takes part in pranking Oozma Kappa in front of the entire university, smiling as he releases the stuffed animals hanging from the ceiling, humiliating Mike without hesitation along with the rest of his team, ending their friendship. In the finals of the Scare Games, Randall loses to Sullivan, who roared so loud that Randall fell into a hearts mat, and as he watches furiously, he exclaims that from now on he will not lose to him again, developing his hatred towards Sulley and generating the existing rivalry between the two.

Randall is ultimately a resentful, hateful and envious jerk who never gets over a petty grudge and acts purely out of spite, willing to do anything to gain fame and recognition, even if it means hurting others.
