Protoceratops is an extinct genus of ceratopsian dinosaur that lived in Mongolia during the Late Cretaceous period.
Description
Photographer James Blaine Shackelford served as a cinematographer for Roy Chapman Andrews, an American explorer, adventurer, naturalist, and director of the American Museum of Natural History. Shackelford joined Andrews on several expeditions across the divided regions of early 20th century China, venturing into the Gobi Desert and Mongolia, as part of a 1922 American expedition aimed at discovering human ancestors. It was here in this desert that the first known remains of Protoceratops were discovered.
Protoceratops were small ceratopsians, up to 2–2.5 m (6.6–8.2 ft) long and around 62–104 kg (137–229 lb) in body mass. While adults were largely quadrupedal, juveniles had the capacity to walk around bipedally if necessary. Unlike later ceratopsians, however, it was a much smaller creature that lacked well-developed horns and retained some primitive traits not seen in later genera.
The Protoceratops has a sharp beak for chopping leaves and branches but it can used for defense against predators like Velociraptor.
