I was touched by the Moon Spirit as a child, so I have its life within me. It's time for me to give it back. This isn't a sad thing. Do you know why the Ocean and Moon Spirits take physical form for a night? It's because they wanna know what it is to be mortal. It's worth the risk to be alive. Even just for one night... Especially for one night.
―Yue to Sokka

Princess Yue is a supporting protagonist of the 2024 Netflix adventure fantasy series Avatar: The Last Airbender, based on the Nickelodeon 2005-2008 animated series of the same name.

She is the princess of the Northern Water Tribe and Sokka's former girlfriend.

She is portrayed by Amber Midthunder.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Yue was born to Chief Arnook and his wife, but she was very sick upon her birth. To save his daughter's life, Arnook had the Priests take her to the Spirit Oasis. Yue was bathed in the sacred waters. Her parents prayed to the Moon Spirit to save her life. Yue was touched by the Moon Spirit, which healed her and turned Yue's once brown hair white.

Since she was young, Yue was engaged to a young soldier Hahn. However, Yue broke off their engagement before the series

Spirited Away[]

Princess Yue (in her dreams) enters the Spirit World as a white Kitsune. There are encounters with Sokka, who entered the Spirit world with his sister and Aang when the latter was meditating.

Legends[]

As the Fire Nation attempts to breach the wall guarding Agna Qal'a in the Northern Water Tribe, Chief Arnook assigns Sokka with the crucial task of safeguarding his daughter, Princess Yue. During the battle, Yue leads Sokka and a fatally injured Momo to the tribe's spirit oasis, where she had been healed by the Moon spirit as a child. There, they use the water to heal Momo. Suddenly Yue and Sokka see a warship coming over them and it's the same one that Sokka helped the Mechanist Sai design.

The trio hides as they see Zhao, Iroh, and a small group of firebenders arrive in the Spirit Oasis using a Fire Nation hot air balloon. Iroh once again warns Zhao that killing the Moon spirit will bring chaos to the world, which has taken the form of a koi fish. Aang joins Yue, and Sokka confronts Zhao and tries to convince him to spare the Moon Spirit. However, the power-hungry general kills it despite Iroh and Aang's efforts, causing the waterbenders to lose their powers. Infuriated, Iroh unleashes his firebending on Zhao's forces and leaves the heroes in the Spirit Oasis. At the same time, Aang merges with the vengeful ocean spirit, La, to fight off the Fire Nation. Yue tells Sokka that she is the only one who can bring the Moon back since she was touched by the Moon Spirit as a child. Sokka tries to stop her, but Yue the only one who has her water-bending abilities, freezes Sokka's feet. She sacrifices her life force to revive Tui, become the new Moon spirit, and restore the waterbenders, the Moon, and Aang to normal.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Waterbending: When the Moon Spirit was killed and the moon disappeared, Yue was the only Waterbender who still had active powers, as she froze Sokka in place with her powers. After she restored Tui, Yue transcended as the next Moon Spirit, making her an Avatar-leveled waterbender.

Trivia[]

  • In the original cartoons:
    • Princess Yue was not a Waterbender until after she was reincarnated as the Moon Spirit.
    • Yue always puts her duty above her feelings. However, in the Netflix adaptation, she chose to be her person. Additionally, she and Hahn mutually broke off their engagement before the series because Hahn lacked his original counterpart's arrogant and sexist nature.
    • She did not travel in the spirit world as a Kitsune and she didn't meet Sokka until he and team Avatar came to Anga Qal'a.
