They are mentioned in the episodes Power Ponies, Trade Ya!, Dragon Dropped, and The Last Problem, physically appear in IDW Publishing's My Little Pony Annual 2014, and are detailed in Enterplay's trading cards. Their archenemy is the Mane-iac.
