"I know my strengths. I'm more the power behind the throne, the guy behind the god. The one who makes it all happen."
―Pete Ross

Pete Ross was a major protagonist in the first three seasons of Smallville. He is the childhood best friend of Chloe Sullivan and Clark Kent. He is also a former student at Smallville High School and a former football player for the Smallville Crows.

History[]

Peter "Pete" Ross is the childhood best friend of both Clark Kent and Chloe Sullivan. He was born in either late 1986 or early 1987 to Abigail Ross, a city judge official, and William "Bill" Ross, a farmer. Pete's family felt a strong personal connection to Smallville and its history, since they had been there since 1870. He was the youngest of five children: with three older brothers (Mike, Sam, and Mark) and one older sister, Kathy. On October 1989, The Rosses were about to sell their cream to corn factory to Lionel Luthor until a meteor shower hit. Pete was around 3 years old at the time. After that day, the Ross Brothers became reluctant to sell their farm to Luthor until Jonathan convinced them to. Lionel, unfortunately, turned back on his word of helping the factory and replaced it with his treatment plant.

When Pete was six years old, He became best friends with Clark after Clark had defended Pate from a bully. In The 8th grade, when Chloe Sullivan just moved from Metropolis to Smallville, she came immediately friends with Pete, who harbored romantic feelings for her. However, Pete never acted upon them because he realized Chloe was in love with Clark. Despite this, Pete often encouraged Clark to ask Lana out, both to make his best friend happy and his jealousy of Clark and Chloe's relationship. Like his father and brothers, Pete became a football player during his freshman year at Smallville High School.

After many years of friendship, Pete finally discovered Clark's powers in their sophomore year of high school. Though he came to terms with Clark being an alien from the planet Krypton, Pete found it hard keeping its secret, but accepting of his Kryptonian friend nonetheless. After being interrogated by a corrupted FBI agent Loder, Pete decided to leave Smallville with his mother because he could never live with himself if he slipped Clark's secret and put him in danger.

Pete returned it to Smallville four years later, where he was dismayed to learn that Clark had built an odd father and son relationship with Lionel Luthor and that Chloe and Lana now knew Clark's secret.
