I need my spirit guide: Pepita.
―Imelda about Pepita

Pepita is an Alebrije who appears in the 2017 Disney/Pixar animated feature film, Coco. She is affiliated with the late members of the Rivera family as their guide-protector.

Background[]

Pepita is an imposing Alebrije who functions as a sort of spiritual guide for Imelda. She cannot speak; instead, she can only make animal-like roars and noises.

Physical appearance[]

Pepita is a cross between a jaguar or a cougar, an eagle, and several other animals, including the teal horns of a ram and a striped iguana-like tail. Overall her body shape is stock in the front and leans in the back. Her back is a deep blue that fades to emerald green across her body, while yellow highlights are scattered among this. Pepita's wings are red while her underbelly is orange, and she has eagle hindlegs with aqua-coloured talons.

While visiting the land of the living, Pepita takes the form of a common house cat. According to the novelization and the book Miguel and the Amazing Alebrijes, this was her original form before she became an Alebrije.

Powers and abilities[]

Pepita is equipped with multiple predatorial features, including her claws and teeth, as well as a pair of strong wings that give her the ability of flight. As a spirit guide, she has impressive tracking skills, as she was able to track Miguel's scent for her mistress by sniffing the petal he touched, and can make Miguel's tracks glow a bright blue by breathing on them. Pepita is also shown to be strong as she is able to carry more than one person on her back. Pepita's protective nature is a reflection of Imelda's "iron lady" personality.

Relationships[]

Dante[]

Dante is Pepita's fellow Alebrije. Throughout the course of the year, Pepita and Dante had become friends, avoiding the cats and dogs are enemies stereotype. Dante shows his affection for her by licking her when they are reuniting with the living on Dia de los Muertos.

The Riveras[]

Pepita has been with the Riveras since the beginning, as Imelda owned her. Pepita is very protective of the Riveras, as she is one of their spirit guides.

Imelda[]

Pepita usually answers to Imelda when she whistles for her. The two have a strong bond, similar to Miguel and Dante's. As her spirit guide, Pepita is very loyal to Imelda and both females are very close with each other. Imelda trusts her completely, even having her track down Miguel and was also seen riding her.

Miguel Rivera[]

Her mistress' great-great-grandson, Miguel, was initially afraid of her when she was tasked by Imelda to look for him. However, Miguel learned she wasn’t as bad as he thought she was and was glad when Pepita and Imelda found him and Hector in time. After Pepita saved him, she had given Miguel a big lick.

Papa Julio, Imelda's son-in-law was also somewhat scared of her. Carmen Rivera later pet Pepita.

Ernesto De La Cruz[]

Before the film, Pepita had no quarrel with de la Cruz because she didn't seem to care. However, when he attempted to kill Miguel (twice) and was revealed for being responsible in killing Hector, she took him and threw him flying to being smashed by the bell again.
