Behind the Scenes[]
Justin Hartley was cast to play Oliver Queen in season 6 of the television series. He was a recurring character in Seasons sex and 7, Hartley was later promoted to main cast in season 8 and remained a part of the cast until the show ended.
When the creators wanted to introduce Batman into Smallville, they were unable to due so because of copyright reasons. Instead Oliver was introduced and this explains why he displays many of Bruce's personality. They are both heroes who are tragic, stoic, billionaire playboys who lost both parents due to Bruce lewising his parents to Joe chill and Oliver's parents being killed by Lionel Luthor. They are both also the Founding members and core the leaders the Justice League, as well as acting as the team's patron. Additionally both Bruce and Oliver are best friends with Clark. Ironically, when Oliver and Smallville's version of Batman officially meet in the season 11 comics, it is revealed that Bruce does not take the Green Arrow seriously.
There was also talks of a spin-off for Smallville: a story where Oliver leads the Justice League. However Justin Hartley refused to do a spin-off because he didn't want to disrespect Smallville when it was airing at the time. Instead, this TV show was revaluated and reinvented and was fit to be a new TV show instead. This TV show ultimately led to the creation of the Arrowverse.
Trivia[]
- Lois was the one who named Oliver's vigilante persona the Green Arrow. Originally, she thought of calling him the Green Arrow Bandit but shortened it.
- Among others, Oliver is also called the emerald Archer by several people such as Mia Dearden.
- He is also referred to as "Arrow" and "Star City's billionaire playboy".
- He seems to wear a lot of green in homage to it being his colored motif in the comics.
- Oliver's mentor, Vordigan is similar to Malcolm Merlyn, who is one of the Green Arrow's arch-enemies .
- Both versions of Oliver from Arrow and Smallville become fathers at the end of this series. The Earth 167 version of Oliver has his son Jonathan while the Earth won / Earth Prime version of Oliver has a son named William Clayton and a daughter named Mia.
- In most comic books The Toyman is a enemy of Superman not Green Arrow. Here Winslow Schott has a personal vendetta against Oliver because he was fired from his job at Queen Industries and framed for Lex's murder.
- ironically in the third season of the TV show Superman and Louis, Onomatopoeia, a traditional Green Arrow villain, was made a recurrent enemy of Superman and his family.
- Oliver and Chloe both named their son after Jonathan Kent, perhaps in a way of them honoring the man who raised Clark, who in turn inspired Chloe and Oliver to become superheroes.
- Oliver was the only hero who was corrupted by the darkness that Darkseid had control over, as both Clark and Chloe were able to resist it.
- Oliver's close bond with Clark mirrors Clark's friendship with Bruce from the original comics due to the creators being unable to use Batman at the time.
- Additionally, Oliver and Clark's relationship seems to resemble Clark's earlier friendship with Lex. However unlike Lex, Clark and Oliver trusted each other because of their secret identities from the get-go,
- The Oliver / Lois/ Clark love triangle serves as a foil to the Clexana triangle. Unlike Lex, who did everything in his power to sabotage Clark and Lana, Oliver comes to terms with the fact that Lois loves Clark and he accepts their relationship.
- Oliver's alias, Roy Connor in "Odyssey" is derived from two characters from DC Comics: Oliver's son Connor Hawke, who succeeded his dad as the second Green Arrow and his protege and adoptive son Roy Harper.
- Unlike the comics Oliver takes on Mia as an apprentice first instead of Roy, who is Speedy and Oliver's first apprentice.
- This is One of the few versions of Oliver Queen who does not end up with Dinah. Instead he ends up falling in love with and marrying Chloe. A similar occurrence happened in the 2012 series Arrow, where Oliver married Felicity Smoak, a girl who is a skilled hacker just like Chloe was, a blonde, and the mother of his children (Jonathan in Smallville and William Clayton and Mia Queen in Arrow).
- However, Dinah and Oliver have been shipped teased, a reference to their relationship in the comics.
