Nyra is the secondary antagonist of the 2010 animated film Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole, based on Guardians of Gahoole book series.
She is the second in command later the leader of the Pure Ones and the mate of Metal Beak who treats her more like a soldier than a wife.
Personality[]
Nyra is just as cruel as her husband is, but maybe even more so. Blinded by her loyalty to her husband, Nyra may have been treated more like a soldier than a mate as she and Surtr never had children. She took pleasure in trying to kill Ezylryb and let her husband attack Soren despite him being the equivalent of a teenager. She also has no qualms with harming children, as she pushes the young recruits to be the best no matter what, such as forcing them to compete in hunting for a bird just to see which one was the best flyer. She also enjoys the cruelty inflicted on owls, as she simply is seen smoking at watching the Guardians endure the pain of the flecks from the Devil's Triangle. She also shares the Pure Ones and her husband's philosophy on Barn Owls being the superior race, as she is seen talking down on Gylfie, an elf owl.
Relationships[]
Surtr[]
At all unknown point, Nyra met Surtur either before or after the Battle of the Ice Claws, for it is unknown if she has ever assisted him in the battle. She shared her husband's view on other owls who were not of Tyto blood. Nyra seems to be genuinely in love with Surtur, but it is unknown if he cared for her at all, as Metal Beak often treats her more like a soldier than a mate, and sees her as useful because she brings him promising young owls to be his warriors. It is unknown if Metal Beak corrupted Nyra like she did with Kludd or of Nyra had these dark thoughts before she met him.
Nyra often refers to Metalbeak as "My Lord" and "My Love." After the Guardians were free from the devil's triangle, Nyra led the Pure Ones into battle but immediately came back to assist metal beak during his duel with Ezylryb. However, before they can kill Ezylryb, Soren (enraged by his brother Kludd's death) went after the owl he thought responsible for his brother's corruption. Gaining the upper hand, Soren attacked Metal Beak, Nyra was concerned when she saw Soren injure Surtur, which was distracting enough for Ezylryb to throw her off of him. She is full of rage when her mate is killed by Soren, and flees with the other Pure Ones, vowing revenge.
Kludd[]
Nyra favores Kludd and is quite proud of his success and accomplishments. Kludd has a crush on her since he first saw her and it is the reason he stayed with the Pure Ones. She doesn't actually care about Kludd, seeing him as nothing more than a pawn for her and Surtr's plan to kill the Guardians. She only wanted him to become a soldier for the Pure Ones to fuel her racism against non-Tytos and make him an example of what a Pure One should be.
Kludd's infatuation with Nyra is based on the fact they were mates in the original six books.
Soren[]
Soren never liked her when he first met her. Nyra thought Soren has potential to be a Pure One. They despise each other because Nyra corrupted Soren's brother and Soren kill her husband during the Battle of the Beaks.
Trivia[]
- In the books, Nyra is Kludd's mate and therefore making her Soren and Eglantine's sister-in-law. However, unlike turn movie counterparts, Nyra doesn't physically appear in any of the first three books that the film is based on. She debuts in the fourth novel The Shattering, where she "shatters" Eglantine and reveals that she has had an egg with Kludd. However, Eglantine later drops the egg on accident, making Nyra vow revenge. After Kludd's death, Nyra took over as the leader of the Pure Ones and hatched his son Nyroc at the end of the sixth book, The Burning, being that their son would avenge Kludd. However, Nyroc was kind-hearted and just like his uncle Soren. He ultimately rejected his mother's philosophies, changed his name to Coryn, and became the king of the Tree. Nyra was later killed by Soren in combat in the end of the fifteenth book.
- Her mate is Surtr, a Great Sooty owl and separate character in the movie. This is ironic given that Greater Sooty Owls were the lowest rank in the Pure Ones' armies in the book and Nyra's hatred towards them.
- If the sequels were made, it is possible that Nyra would have become the main antagonist alongside Kludd and ultimately failed in avenging her mate and suffered a similar fate in the book.
