Nya Smith is the tritagonist of the LEGO Ninjago franchise.
She is the current Elemental Master and Ninja of Water, the daughter of Ray and Maya, the younger sister of Kai, the close friend/surrogate sister of Lloyd Garmadon, the best friend of Skylor, a student of Master Wu, the former lover/close friend turned enemy of Jay Walker, a close friend of Zane and Cole, and an archenemy of Kalmaar and Acronix. Unlike her brother, Nya was not officially a part of Master Wu's group of students due to the prophecy of the Green Ninja - a boy destined to defeat Lord Garmadon.
As her brother trained to be a ninja, Nya grew tired of being left out from the team and created the identity of Samurai X. As her story progressed, Nya proved herself to be a capable warrior and became very good friends with Lloyd Garmadon and Skylor.
She is voiced by Kelly Metzger, her masked voice as Samurai X was provided by Michael Dobson. In the Lego Ninjago: Nindroids Handheld Game, she is voiced by Eliza Schneider and in LEGO Ninjago: Shadow of Ronin, she was voiced by Jules De Jongh.

Nya was kidnapped by Garmadon's forces, earning her brother's fury. It was his abduction of her that made Kai form a team, the Ninjas and save his sister.

When the Ninja were presumed dead as they were trapped in the realm of the Dragon and the Oni, Nya and Lloyd were the only supposed surviving members of the group. Like Lloyd, Nya grieved for her brother, her boyfriend, and their other close friends. She was scared for Lloyd, as she always failed to reconnect with him over losing their friends and his power. Nya later comforted the depowered Lloyd and swore she would protect him in their friends' absence.

Personality[]
Nya is a strong-willed and intelligent young windscreen who constantly has to prove herself. Because she was a girl, Nya faces prejudice and sexism, which proves to be a fatal mistake on her enemies' part. She dislikes being labeled by association, like "Jay's girlfriend" or "Kai's sister," choosing to be her own person and getting annoyed by her brother's overprotectiveness. This and not being treated like a member of the team by her friends, Nya created the secret identity of Samurai X. Even though she never had formal training at the beginning of the show and didn't officially become a member of the Ninjas until season 5, Nya is perfectly capable of defending herself.
It seemed that Nya was aware of Jay's crush on her very early on, such as when she nodded to Jay's offer to walk to the junkyard in "Snakebit," and by "Once Bitten, Twice Shy," she revealed that she returned his feelings. She may also have too much faith in machinery, or is easily influenced by them. In Season 3, she allowed a matchmaking machine to get between her and Jay by introducing Cole as a potential love interest. It seems she considered it in that season, but ultimately chose Jay. However, this process took a few seasons as Nya tried to separate herself from being solely a love interest for the main ninja.
Due to living on their own since their parents mysteriously disappeared, Nya and Kai deeply cared for each other, often relying on each other since they were kids. However, Nya and Kai would often fight like normal siblings, with her getting frustrated that her brother was increasingly protective of her or him obsessing about being the Green Ninja. Despite this, the siblings were deeply impacted by each other, as Nya has stated that Kai is her hero and someone who has always been there for her. She would eventually expand her sisterly relationship to Kai's best friend Lloyd Garmadon, who she swore to protect alongside the rest of her friends. They especially became close in the "Hunted" arc when they believed themselves to be the surviving members of the Ninjas.
Nya is shown to not be easily impressed by wealth or royalty. She had early unfounded animosity towards Harumi and the Royal Family of Ninjago. Despite this, Nya have better dating advice to Lloyd about how to deal with his crush on Harumi better than the boys did and didn't like Harumi until the later she praised her for her skill by Harumi.

- Both are stubborn.
- They have two protective brothers.

- They took care of their brothers when they were orphans.
- They are dedicated to protecting the hero of their world (Lloyd and Aang) while seeing them as younger brother figure.
- However, a difference is Nya and Lloyd's relationship is strictly platonic while Aang and Katara end up marrying each other.

- Katara was angry with her father for leaving her and her brother alone when he went to fight in the Hundred Year was. However he joined the war to not only help others but to protect his children.
- Nya was angry with her mother, especially when her coddling was getting on her nerves. However Maya's and Ray's disappearance was understandable, given that they were forced to help the Time Master Twins with the threat that Nya and Kai could be harmed.
- Despite her mother being the Water Ninja before her, and being named after Nyad, the original Water Ninja, it was confirmed by the writers that Nya and Kai are not related to her, meaning Nya's mom inherited the position of the water ninja through spiritual means not hereditary means like Skylor Chen.
- Nya's name is pronounced with a long e over a short "Y" making it sound like knee-uh.
