The Night Fury is a species of dragon featured in the How to Train Your Dragon franchise. It is a dragon originally claimed to be the "unholy offspring of lightning and death itself." For centuries, the Night Furies were considered a rare and a mysterious species by most from Viking Culture because Grimmel the Grisly slaughtered most of them.
Overview[]

For centuries, the Night Furies were considered a rare and a very mysterious species of dragons by most from Viking Culture. This is because the Night Furies were hunted to near extinction by the dragon poacher Grimmel the Grisly and his pack of brainwashed Deathgrippers, becoming an infamous figure worldwide. This left Toothless the only known survivor.
They are related to the Light Fury and Night Lights.
In the present day, it is implied that the Night Furies may finally be extinct following Toothless's passing generations earlier. However, another possibility is that Night Furies escaped to the hidden world, thrived there and just have not yet made an appearance in the series.
If the idea that they are extinct is true, their legacy lives on through the Night Light, a dragon species who are the descendants of both the Night Furies and the Light Furies.

Unnamed Night Fury(s)[]
Grimmel the Grisly found a Night Fury and killed it where it slept. Since then, he started a genocide against all Ngiht Furies. However, Toothless was the only one who evaded capture. It is implied that Toothless' parents were victims of the genocide as well.
Toothless[]

- Main article: Toothless
Toothless is a Night Fury who is the "alpha of all dragons", the former dragon companion of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, and the king of the Hidden World. He is also the mate of the light fury and the father of their three children, Ruffrunner, Dart and Pouncer. He is also the sole survivor of the Night Fury race who escaped Grimmel the Grisly's massacre and One of the two progenators of the Night Light race. He was 15 in the first film, 18 to 19 in Race To The Edge, 20 in the second film and 21 in the threequel. In the epilogue Toothless was around 31.
In the first film, Hiccup shot down Toothless and unintentionally had broken off his tail fin. Finding that he could not kill the Night Fury, Hiccup set Toothless free. They ended up becoming lifelong friends and Toothless and Hiccup's friendship led to the Viking-Dragon war to end after they killed the Red Death.
Five years later, Toothless became an Alpha after defeating Drago Bludvist's Bewilderbeast, who left in defeat and mutually respected him.
In the third film Toothless was forced to escape to the Hidden World with The Light Fury and the other dragons when Hiccup realized humans weren't willing to accept dragons until 1300 years later. He remained in the Hidden World with his mate and their three children. Despite leaving Toothless and Hiccup's love for each other remained even when they were reunited 10 years later. Since the Hidden World exists, it is possible that Toothless is not the last of his kind and that there are others living there.
However, Toothless and his mate were able to preserve both their species by being the progenators of the Night Light species.
Subspecies[]
Light Fury[]

Hiccup and the Light Fury, Toothless' mate and the mother of his sons and daughter, Dart, Pouncer and Ruffrunner
- Main article: Light Fury
The Light Fury is a subspecies of the Night Fury. Because of this, they are suitable mates for Night Furies and are able to procreate with them.
Both Toothless and his Light Fury mate had children of their own and started a new species of Night Fury/Light Fury hybrids, the Night Lights.
Red Night Fury[]

In the video game, Ruffnut and Tuffnut's cousin Buffnut owns a Red Night Fury. According to the How to Train Your Dragon Wiki, it lists Buffnut's Fury as a Night Fury.
It is possibly a subspecies of Night Fury.
Hybrids[]
Night Lights[]
The Night Lights are the hybrid children of a Night Fury and a Light Fury. The first known Night Lights were Toothless and Light Fury's children, Dart, Pouncer and Ruffrunner. By Dragons: The Nine Realms, Toothless and the Light Fury's descendants had expanded to Thunder and his family consisting of his parents and his younger siblings, Shadow, Goggles (gender currently unknown), and Splattertail (gender currently unknown).
Trivia[]
- in the original book, Toothless was mistaken for a small common or garden dragon. However, he was revealed in the last book, to be a baby Sea Dragonicus Giganticus Maximus, which may have inspired the writers to make Toothless the Alpha of the Dragons.
- In addition to animals, Toothless' likeliness was also based on Stitch's.
