Nanotyrannus ( "dwarf tyrant") is an extinct genus of tyrannosaurid theropod dinosaur that appearsin various media.

Description[]

The Nanotyrannus lives in North America during the Late Cretaceous period. Nanotyrannus is recognized as the fourth smallest known tyrannosauroid, with only Dilong, Guanlong, and Proceratosaurus being smaller. It was discovered by Charles W. Gilmore in 1941 and described in 1946 as a specimen of Gorgosaurus. It was among the last of the tyrannosaurids to exist prior to the terrestrial mass extinction event at the end of the Cretaceous period, known as the K-T extinction. Furthermore, it is noted as the very last non-avian dinosaur to have appeared on Earth. This species emerged approximately 66 million years ago and survived for less than 50,000 years.

It has been a debate that either or not Nanotyrannus is a valid species or a juvenile Tyrannosaurus rex. In 2024, it has been confirmed that it is own species because of its arms that are a half longer than T. rex's arms.

Appearances[]

  • Nanotyrannus appears in the Dino Dana: The Movie, represented as a juvenile Tyrannosaurus rex.
  • Nanotyrannus was one of the many dinosaurs who appeared in the Dinopedia section of Jurassic Park Institute.
  • Fictional descendants of Nanotyrannus, named Quintaglios, a race of evolved sentient dinosaurs, was the main species of Quintaglio Ascension Trilogy.
  • The Nanotyrannus was a common enemy in the Sunstorm game Carnivores: Cityscape.
  • Nanotyrannus will be featured as a juvenile T. rex in Saurian.
  • In the now defunct Mattel game Xtractaurs, there was a figure of Nanotyrannus called Quickfire that could be scanned into the game.
