Mordred is the secondary antagonist of BBC's Merlin. He is the boy who is destined to destroy Arthur Pendragon and united in evil with Morgana Pendragon. At first loyal to Arthur and Camelot, he later turned on the kingdom after his lover, Kara was executed, first by telling Morgana that Merlin is Emrys, her mortal Enemy. Afterwards, She became his lieutenant and second in command before his demise at the hands of Arthur Pendragon during the Battle of Camlann.

He is portrayed by Asa Butterfield in the first two seasons and Alexander Vlahos as an adult

History[]

Season 1[]

Mordred first came to Camelot with his mentor, and possible father, Cerdan, to get supplies. Unfortunately, the merchant selling supplies revealed them as druids to Uther Pendragon, who's men then came after them, Though Cerdan's magic was able to hold the knights back, they could not escape together, so Cerdan lowered the drawbridge, and after saying goodbye to Mordred, sent him through. Mordred was wounded, but escaped, and was hidden from the king by Merlin and Morgana. While he was being treated, Cerdan had been executed, leaving Mordred traumatized at the loss of his father. Mordred and Morgana would later try to escape, but Arthur unfortunately found them, and brought them to the dungeon. Eventually, Arthur refused to kill Mordred as he was a child, after Uther refused to call off the execution, Arthur went to rescue Mordred, and Merlin almost refused because Kilgharrah told him of Mordred's destiny to kill Arthur, but came to help them. Mordred then was returned to the Druids, and told Arthur his name before leaving.

Season 2[]

Season 5[]

After revealing Merlin's identity to Morgana, he became her loyal lieutenant and second-in-command. She later had a sword forged from the flames of her dragon, Aithusa, in order for Mordred to have a weapon that is complimentary to Excalibur.

However, during the Battle of Camlann, born Mordred and Arthur fatally stabbed each other with their respective magical swords.

Legacy[]

Morgana attempted to avenge her fallen friend by hunting down Merlin and Arthur on their quest to the lake of Avalon. However, like Mordred, Morgana was killed by Merlin with Excalibur herself

Trivia[]

  • In some versions of Arthurian Legends, such as the legend itself and the 1998 film Merlin, Mordred is usually a product of an affair born between Arthur and either Morgana or Morgause, unaware they are half-siblings. He is also related to Gawain and Agravaine, who are either his siblings or his cousins, depending on which version is his birthday. However, in the show itself, Mordred is not Morgan and Arthur's son and instead the son of a druid man, Cerdan. However, he had a mother-son relationship with Morgana.
