Molly Evans is a minor character of Monk and the deuteragonist of its sequel movie Mr. Monk's Last Case: A Monk Movie. She is the daughter of Judge Ethan Rickover and Trudy Monk and the step-daughter of Adrian Monk.
In Mr. Monk's Last Case: A Monk Movie, it was revealed that she was engaged to reporter Griffin Briggs, who was later murdered by Lucas Kubrick under orders from Rick Eden.
Biography[]
The child who would be named Molly Evans was born to Trudy Monk and Ethan Rickover on January 2, 1983, while Trudy was still in her late teens or early twenties, and attending the University of California, Berkeley. Because she was the product of an adulterous liaison, Rickover concealed her parentage by placing her for adoption, and falsely telling Trudy that she had died shortly after birth. Trudy never knew her daughter had survived, as she died from a car bomb planted in her vehicle in 1997, a good 12 years before her murder was solved.
At some point after meeting Adrian, Molly became well acquainted with her stepfather's friends, Natalie Teeger, Randy Disher, Leland Stottlemeyer and Sharona Fleming. She later became engaged to man named Griffin.
Personality[]
According to Monk, Molly has many traits similar to her mother. However like her stepfather, Molly has a sharp mind and insists "He's the guy" and mutters Adrian's catchphrase "I don't know how he did it but he did it" when Molly (currently) believes that Rick Eden killed her fiance.
Relationships[]
Family[]
Adrian Monk[]
When viewing Trudy's last Christmas present, he found it difficult that Trudy had an affair with her professor and that she "lost" the baby. However, at the time, Trudy (and Adrian) both assumed the child had died. It was not until Adrian confronted Ethan Rickover, the man who killed Trudy that he confronted Rickover for killing three people for nothing. Before Rickover’s death, he told Monk to "take care of her," which he didn't understand at first. After finding a newspaper that a newborn girl was found in the park by a nurse in 1981, Adrian figured out that Rickover was leading him to Molly and trying to go for compensation for killing Molly's mother.
He managed to find out that Trudy's daughter survived childbirth and did not die as Trudy believed. With help from Stottlemeyer, Adrian found a now 27-year-old Molly Evans, who Adrian immediately connected to, and eventually paternal affection for his step-daughter.
Though Adrian began the story as a broken man with no family and various problems, meeting Molly finally allowed him to not only heal but have a family again.
It was shown in Mr. Monk's Last Movie that Molly and Monk may not be biologically related but they do have a strong father-daughter bond. She moved in with Adrian following the COVID-19 pandemic to look after him after he relapsed from his OCD. However, Adrian wants Molly to live her life and doesn't want her worrying about him constantly due to his desire to even commit suicide. However after Molly's fiancé was murdered, Monk made it personal to find Griffin's killer after Molly hires him to find out the truth.
Near the end of the film, Molly tried to Monk from risking his life because losing him would destroy her. However, when he figured how to prove how Eden did it, Adrian solved the case and with Molly's help, was able to regain his status as a police consultant.
Trudy Monk[]
Trudy Monk is Molly's biological mother. Before her birth, Trudy was looking forward to being a mother and said the minutes her daughter was alive was one of the best months in her life. However, her former lover Ethan Rickover paid off the midwife and misinformed Trudy that Molly died to keep their affair a secret. Trudy eventually died in Christmas 1997 from a car bomb and never learned her daughter survived.
According to Molly, Adrian hasn't been the same since solving Trudy's murder. Despite never meeting Trudy, Molly inherited most of her biological mother's traits and doesnt contradict Adrian when he refers to Trudy as her mother.
Beth and Andrew Evans[]
The name of Molly's adoptive parents. They never appeared on the series. Molly is either estranged from them or they passed away, since she seems to have a very strong father/daughter relationship with her stepfather, Adrian Monk, instead.
