“I would have waited an eternity for this. It's over Prime”
―Megatron to a mortally wounded Optimus Prime
Megatron (born D-16, formerly Megatronus before his downfall) is the main antagonist of the Transformers franchise. He is a tyrannical overlord and the leader of the Decepticons and the twin brother and arch-enemy of Optimus Prime, leader of the Autobots. Unlike his fellow Cybertronians, Megatron believes that humanity to be a weakness and vows destroy it as well as everything Optimus holds dear. He also has a rivalry with his Second-in-command, Starscream, who he often abuses both physically and mentally. This often leads the latter into plotting against his master no matter what the cost.
He made his live-action debut as the main antagonist of the 2007 film Transformers.
Before he had been corrupted by the Fallen, Megatronus was considered a completely different personl he always strove to be better, but at times, has been very close with Optimus Prime when they were simply Megatronus and Orion Pax.
Usually by the time of the franchise he has appeared in, Megatron has lost all honor he previously had. Described as the "Harbinger of Death" by Sam Witwicky, Megatron is truly devious. After being corrupted by the Fallen, Megatron became cold, ruthless, cruel and sadistic, up to the point where he ruthlessly tortured Bumblebee for his own amusement and damaged his voice box. However, the leader of the Decepticons was very charismatic; using his words of manipulation, Megatron amassed an army of Cybertronians like Dreadwing to join his quest for world domination. Despite his status as a leader, Megatron merely sees them as a tool in his goals. However he felt about the planet Cybertron, Megatron was power-hungry, only listen to revive his homeworld so he can rule it.
Those who defied him like Cylas, Airachnid, and Predaking, Megatron would eliminate those he sees as a threat in his quest for power. He was very stubborn and did not like to back down from a fight probably due to his time as a gladiator of Kaon. However, he was convinced by Starscream to abandon the Fallen to Prime, believing even cowards survive. In the subject of the Second-in-command, Megatron often abused Starscream, being aware of his plans to one day take over his army by force. However, he had a high tolerance for his fellow Decepticon, Dreadwing, something not everyone sees and admired his attempt to avenge his brother Skyquake. He also had vowed to destroy his old foe, Optimus Prime, and his Autobot followers at any cost as they continued their war on Earth. He has come to view organic beings like humans, to being a waste, mocking Optimus' and the Autobots' weakness.
Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
Cybertronian Physiology: Megatron is one of the most, if not the most powerful Cybertronian, with seemingly only Optimus Prime and Lockdown being on par. His powers and abilities include:
Superhuman Strength: His strength is equal to that of Optimus Prime. He exceeds most superhumans in strength. He has hit Optimus Prime through a mountain.
Superhuman Durability: Megatron has Invulnerability to anything humans and most Transformers can use against him. He is extremely resistant to high and low temperatures and can function in almost any environment.
Superhuman Speed: Megatron has enhanced speed capabilities to different extents.
Flight: He can generally fly. Megatron has the power of flight in robot mode despite not having a flying alternate mode, can travel unaided through space between planets and can fly while drunk on Energon.
Superhuman Intelligence: While his sanity is often very questionable he has shown genius-level intelligence both as a military commander or strategist and as an engineer creating absurd inventions and weapons.
Transformation: Their colloquial name is a reference to their signature ability - one which allows them to scan nearly anything and transform into it. While they normally appear as humanoid robots about the size of a small building, their alternate forms allow them to take on the appearances of weapons, vehicles, animals, and more, complete with whatever benefits such transformations can provide. A Cybertronian's ability to transform is tied to several features within their biology. The first is a transforming cog embedded in their minds, which gives them the mental capacity to activate their transformations consciously alongside their brain module. In the original Generation one cartoon, he was also the only one to turn into a machine gun-like device.
Abilities[]
Master Tactician and Strategist: Megatron is a brilliant military tactician and a peerless general, with centuries of experience in using strategies, quite possibly one of the best masters of tactical warfare in the universe. Megatron’s mastery and experience in using strategy and tactics allows him to create extremely complex and well-coordinated plans and execute them effectively.
Master Manipulator: Megatron is an extremely manipulative and devious individual, able to manipulate many Cybertronians into working for him.
Master Combatant: Megatron has millions of years of combat experience. He's often portrayed as having roots in gladiatorial combat and/or pit fighting. He has demonstrated the ability to go up against Primes and combiners much larger than himself.
Master Swordsman: Megatron is an extremely skilled swordsman with which he was able to easily fight off the combined assault of Bumblebee, Arcee, and Bulkhead in Prime, including the Rachet's lasers and near-entirely pressure Optimus Prime into the defensive and soon gain the upper hand and break his sword.
Expert Marksman: He can throw most projectile weaponry with great aim and is well-versed in the use of firearms.
Indomitable Will: Megatron has phenomenal determination, fearlessness and strength of will.
Optimus Prime is the leader of the Autobots (the mortal enemy of the decepticons). Being the leader of the latter, Megatron sees Optimus as his personal enemy. He was always jealous of his brother; having once been a student of Sentinel, he noticed the favoritism was not in Megatron's favor, but in Optimus.
He sees humanity as a weakness. In some iterations, his ill-will is mostly directed towards the Witwicky children, such as Sam, Spike and Daniel, because their closeness with the fellow Autobots.

Quotes[]
IDW Comics[]
“I look back over the last four million years and recognise that there have been only two constants: hate... and you.”
―Megatron to Optimus Prime
“You will stand down. If you fight, you die. There is no room anymore for mercy. In the end, you are all expendable. Choose.”
―Megatron to Starscream's troops, Infiltration.
“I've heard it said that we only gain wisdom though suffering- and tonight I intend to make you very wise. ”
―Megatron to Sentinel Prime, Megatron Origin.
“You see, leadership is not something I fear losing: it is something I dread you gaining. In the moments when my all-consuming destiny lies ahead of me, you remind me of the need to watch my back. And that is your importance, Starscream. ”
―Megatron to Starscream, Spotlight: Megatron.
“So long as you stand in my way-so long as anyone stands in my way, I will respond by killing. Murder on an industrial scale. Because in the final analysis, I would happily wade across a river of corpses, chest-deep in rust and grease and engine oil, just to crush the spark of the last Autobot standing. And I would not do so simply as a means to an end. No. I'd do it, Prime, because it would give me pleasure.”
―Megatron to Optimus, Chaos Theory
Transformers Film Universe[]
“You still fight for the weak. That is why YOU LOSE!”
In earlier drafts, He would allegedly consume the sparks of his enemies, which is disturbing as he essentially is consuming his Autobot enemies' hearts.
The book version and comic book adaptations depict Megatron to being more tragic and closer to his IDW and Transformers Prime counterparts. In the novelisation of the third book, Dark of the Moon, Megatron is spared from his date of being killed by Optimus. Instead he shows forms of redemption, and is actually tired of fighting. He and the other Decepticons leave Earth to rebuild Cybertron and Megatron hopes to one day rebuild his broken relationship with Optimus.
