Mary Watson (née Morstan), born Rosamund Mary, is one of the protagonists of Sherlock.

Background[]

Prior to the series, Mary was born Rosamund Mary and was a skilled assassin. However, she needed to hide from the past after her team was betrayed on one of their missions. Back in 2008, she took the name of a stillborn buried and took on the backstory that she was an orphan.

"The Empty Hearse"[]

In between the two years of seasons two and three, Mary and John are revealed to have been dating for six months and that John intended to propose to her. However, they are intercepted by Sherlock Holmes, who reveals to John that he is alive, which angers him. Mary takes an immediate liking to Sherlock and began reading her boyfriend's old blogs that detailed on John's past cases with Sherlock. One day when she is returning home, Mary receives a text from people who abducted John prior. They are able to rescue John from the flames.

At the end of the episode, John and Mary are engaged to one another.
