Martin "Marty" McFly" is the main protagonist of the Back to the Future franchise, appearing in its main trilogy, the spin-off animated series and the video games. In the original film, Marty has to return to 1985 after using a time machine invented by his close friend and mentor, Emmett "Doc" Brown but first, has to get his parents together before he and his siblings are erased from existence.
In the second film, he works with Doc to stop his son Marty Jr, and daughter, Marlene, from committing a burglary with a gang led by Griff Tannen, the grandson of Marty's arch-enemy, Biff Tannen and later stop his father from being murdered when creating an alternate 1985.
He later time travels one hundred years into the past to prevent Doc from being killed by Biff's great-grandfather, Beaufort Tannen. Marty ultimately succeeds in his goals and saves his future while reuniting with Jennifer. After stopping himself from letting Douglas Needles goad him into a drag race, the action causes him to never enter an accident (as mentioned in Part 2.) Doc tells Jennifer and Marty that their future is not yet set-in-stone and that it is what they make of it.
In the film series, Marty was portrayed by Michael J. Fox and later voiced by Fox in the video games. In the non-canon animated series, Marty is voiced by David Kaufman, who also voices Danny Phantom in the Nickelodeon television series of the same name.
Personality
Marty is a determined, optimistic, calm and carefree teen most of the time. He usually hangs out with his best friend, Dr. Emett Brown (affectionally named "Doc"). He additionally seems to be ashamed of his family at first, as his father is a meek and cowardly man fearful of his boss Biff, and his mother is a depressed alcoholic. However, he eventually sees the type of people his parents were in high school. In the first film, Marty is insecure of his music, despite Jennifer's encouragement to submit it to various producers and record companies. He later finds out from teen!George that he is unsure of getting his sci-fi books published in fear of no one liking it.
In dangerous situations, Marty tends to be resourceful and intelligent. His biggest flaw is his persistence in wanting to show people that he is not a coward, which sometimes brings him unnecessary risks; and he can't stand being called "chicken" either. However, by the end of the third movie, Marty realizes that he shouldn't care what people think of him, so he learns to ignore insults, and even avoids what would have been an unfortunate event in his life; a collision with a Rolls-Royce, where he was challenged to a race by Needles.
