Martha Kent is a supporting character in the Superman comics. She is from the rural community of Smallville, the wife of Jonathan Kent, the adoptive mother of Clark and Conner Kent, the mother-in-law of Lois Lane, the adoptive aunt of Kara Zor-El and the paternal adoptive grandmother of Otho-Ra, Osul-Ra, and Jon Kent, the 2nd Superman. She also acts as a motherly figure to members of the Superman Family, such as Kara Danvers and Kon-El.

Background[]

Martha and Jonathan are Clark's loving parents who instill high morals and encourage him to use his abilities to help others. She is posted referred to as "Ma" Kent by Clark and "Aunt Martha" by Kara. In certain storylines, Martha is even credited with crafting Clark's superhero costume, or at least the original version, using the baby blankets that had swaddled him as an infant, as they are virtually indestructible.

In the original continuity, the Kents pass away after Clark finishes high school. In the revised continuity, Martha continues to play a role in the story after her husband's passing, whether due to a heart attack or being killed by Brainiac. In "The New 52" reboot, they are killed by a drunk driver, with Dr. Manhattan orchestrating it to test how Clark would fare as Superman in a world without Jonathan and Martha's guidance.

Jonathan and Martha are in the 2019 "DC Rebirth" relaunch.
