Marie de' Medici is the main antagonist of the only episode she appeared in, "The Exiles" and was mentioned in "An Ordinary Man."
Background[]
Marie de' Medici was the mother of King Louis XIII. It is revealed that Marie, while she was in labor, gave birth to two sons: a deformed son named Philippe and Louis XIII. Ashamed of her malformed son, Marie abandoned him and instead made Louis the prince of France.
Marie attempted to taking over the throne from him twice. In the first time, she ruled with an iron fist and even imprisoned Treville in prison and was hated by Cardinal Richelieu. Louis banished her and on pain of death if she ever returned.
Personality[]
On the outside, Marie de’ Medici in the early part of the episode plays the role of the loving mother who sought forgiveness to her son for past crimes of attempting to steal the throne from Louis. She is actually manipulating her son so that she can worm her way back into his heart in order for her grandson, Henry, to become the rightful heir to the throne. Marie is also noted for being extremely power-hungry, especially from the previous mention of her attempt to overthrow Louis and Queen Anne. Both Treville and Cardinal Richelieu mutually dislike her because of her arrogance and trying to take the throne.
Her plan falls through when Henry is seemingly drowned in a river. Rather than sadness for losing a grandson, Marie was upset that her plan failed. In reality, Aramis faked Henry's death so he and his mother, Agnes could leave France and live with each other.
