Xu Wenwu, also known as the Mandarin, is a major antagonist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He is the overarching antagonist of the Iron Man trilogy and all hail the king and the main antagonist of the 2021 from Shang-Chi and The Legend Of The Ten Rings.
He is a war criminal and terrorist who found the mystical artifacts known as the Ten Rings and formed the villain syndicate of the same name. as well as the father of both Xu Shang-Chi and Xu Xialing. He initially gave up his quest for power after falling in love with their mother but resumed it once his wife was killed at the hands of the Iron Gang Leader.
He is portrayed by Tony Leung Chiu-wai in his Hollywood debut.
Trivia[]
- The reveal that Alrich Killian was the Mandarin to Tony during their final showdown was heavily backlashed by fans. In fact, Killian was meant to be the Marvel Cinematic Universe's version of the character according to Shane Black.
- However, Kevin Fiege later contradicted this statement by saying that Killian only took the Mandarin alias because he built it around the legends he heard of.
- He later suggested that a version of The Mandarin closer to the comic book would appear. He was revealed to exist in the One-Shot short All Hail the King and later, debuted in Shang Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings.
- Wenwu replaces Dr. Fu Manchu as Shang-Chi's father due to the fact Manchu was a controversial character due to stereotypes and exaggerations.
- This Also makes him the second villain in the Marvel Cinemark Universe to replace the main characters' father with another, with the first being Ego The Living Planetz who replaced J'son as Star Lord's father in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
