Malia Tate is one of the three tritagonists (alongside Liam Dunbar and Derek Hale) of the MTV series Teen Wolf and a supporting character in the Paramount+ 2023 reunion sequel film. She is the ex-girlfriend  of Scott McCall and Stiles Stilinski, and the best friend of Kira Yukimura and Lydia Martin. She later learns that she is the biological daughter of Peter Hale, and therefore, the cousin of Derek Hale and briefly the co-protege of Deucalion in blind-fighting

At the start of the series, She is a Werecoyote who feels guilty for causing the accidental death of her mother and sister. However, Malia later becomes a member of the McCall Pack and is the only were coyote

Biography[]

Malia was born in the fall of the mid-1990s to the Werecoyote Corinne (the assassin known as the Desert Wolf) and a Werewolf, Peter Hale. However, the circumstances of her birth remain a mystery as well as not explain as to why Melia is not a Werecoyote-Werewolf Hybrid. She was adopted by Henry and Evelyn Tate and Peter's memories of Malia's birth were taken from him by his sister Talia with the Werewolf memory share ritual. ("Letharia Vulpina"), ("Weaponized") Malia was raised at the Tate Family's ranch, and her adoptive parents had a biological daughter, Kylie, sometime later.

When Malia was around nine years old, she got into a fight with her mother on the night of a full moon before they were getting ready to leave the house on an errand. To this day, Malia cannot remember what the fight was aboutā€”all she can recall is that, in her anger, she told them, "I wish you were all dead." While Evelyn was driving their car through the back roads of Beacon Hills, the Desert Wolf appeared in the middle of the road and began to shoot at them, which frightened her so much that she reflexively jerked the wheel away and drove into the nearby nature preserve.

The known details of what follows are still vague as well, but it can be assumed that the stress of the shooting and the detour, in conjunction with the full moon, caused Malia to transform into a full coyote the first time out of stress, which either caused the wreck in the woods or was the result of it. It can also be assumed, due to Malia's blue eyes, that she was so overcome by the effects of her first full moon that she killed her mother and sister before running deeper into the woods, where she would live as a coyote for the next eight years out of guilt for her actions. It took three days before anyone even found the scene of the car crash.

Personality[]

Like her father, Malia is sarcastic but also very stubborn, a trait he wishes to deny.

Powers & Abilities[]

Powers[]

Werecoyote Physiology: Malia was born the daughter of Peter Hale and Corinne. For some unknown reason, Malia only inherited her mother's werecoyote powers and displayed no werewolf heritage. So After Malia was born, some of Corinne's powers transferred to her daughter. Corinne claimed that Malia stole her powers on purpose; however, Malia was just a child and this was unintentional. If Malia were to have a daughter or son on her own, then it is highly possible that she would transfer her powers to her child.  She had more powers and abilities than any other human and had the rare ability to fully shift into a coyote-like her aunt Talia or her cousins Laura and Derek. After Corinne attempts to kill Malia, she absorbs her mother's entire powers with Belaskos' talons. Since then, Malia seemed to have remastered her powers and ability to shift into a coyote because she never shifted to a full coyote in seasons four and five.

  • Super Strength: Malia Tate has supernatural strength, giving her the ability to break chains and locks, punch through walls, and lift any heavy object with relative ease. However, Malia initially needed to activate the ability on a conscious level, as she needed to break the lock on the door to Stiles' "Quiet room." However, she became accustomed to her powers after learning how to shift between human, werecoyote, and coyote form.
  • Super Speed: Werecoyotes possess incredible speed and agility which surpass even the most athletic humans. She can run on both two and four legs, both in her human and coyote forms. One night, when Malia caught the scent of blood, she ran so fast through the woods that Chris Argent, a highly skilled marksman, had to concentrate hard to keep his rifle sights on her.
  • Super Agility/Reflexes: Malia Tate can jump from very large distances and jump from several stories (especially off high buildings. She is also more acrobatic, gymnastic, and athletic. Her reflexes are enhanced as well. She dodges bullets or any punches.  perceiving objects more powerful than any human can, catching arrows in mid-air, and dodging bullets
  • Super Durability: Malia can withstand physical punishment much better than any human alive. She can survive falling off high-story buildings and being thrown across the room. She can tolerate being punched, kicked, thrown into walls, and falling from extremely tall heights without serious injury. She was also able to withstand battle much longer than a human or werecoyote
  • Super Senses: Malia Tate has an incredibly keen sense of smell, sight, and hearing better than most species. She is nocturnal and can see across long distances and track someone through her scents. She can hear whispered voices from afar and interpret chemosignals in scents. Her supernatural eyes can also see a Nemeton when it conceals itself or a Kitsuneā€™s aura, especially the younger ones.
  • Accelerated Healing: Malia Tate can possess extraordinary enhanced regenerative healing. She had a powerful healing factor from her healing from full body injuries. She is immune to human diseases but is susceptible to the paralytic effects of Kanima poison. She can also recover from her paralysis faster than a human and a werewolf.
    • Longevity: Malia can live for years due to her accelerated healing. They have a decelerated aging rate and live longer and healthier than humans. It is unknown what her age rate is.
  • Shapeshifting: Being a werecoyote, Malia has the power to shapeshift from a regular human to a coyote-like form; however she displays more coyote forms, including a ridged brow, fangs, glowing eyes, claws, mutton chops, pointed ears, and ridged brows. She can simply make her eyes glow to enhance her eyesight or identify themselves as supernatural creatures.
    • Advanced Shapeshifting: Malia Tate has been capable of fully shapeshifting into a true coyote since she was nine years of age, though it wasn't until recently that she was able to consciously control it. It is unknown if this ability is something all Werecoyotes are capable of doing upon activating her powers, if it is a learned skill that any Werecoyote has the potential to achieve, or if it is a genetic trait that only some Werecoyotes possess. However, it is highly possible that Malia's heritage as a Hale could factor into her ability to do so.
  • Pain Absorption: Werecoyotes, like Werewolves, possess the ability to absorb pain from other living beings through tactile contact. She typically does this by putting her hands on the arm or affected body part of the being in pain and drawing the pain into themselves, which manifests as a darkening of the veins in the Werecoyote's hands that travels up her arms and into her chest, neck, and sometimes even her face, depending on how much pain is absorbed. Malia has used this power to siphon the pain experienced by Corey Bryant after he was burned by Jordan Parrish's hellhound fire and also used it to absorb the pain experienced by her biological father Peter Hale after he was burned following his trip through the portal between the real world and the Phantom Train Station.
  • Animal Instincts: Malia can possess the same animal instincts as their coyote counterparts, causing them to instinctively think and behave like a coyote would. This includes being territorial over her living environment, determining whether to fight or flee from danger and being aroused by the scent of blood after a kill. Malia has specially developed animal instincts compared to her shapeshifter peers.

Abilities[]

Weaknesses[]

  • Mountain Ash: Werecoyotes, like the majority of supernatural species in the show, cannot cross barriers made of mountain ash or rowan wood, nor can they touch or manipulate the wood or its ash in a non-barrier form. This makes them vulnerable to being trapped within a ring of mountain ash, or being prevented from entering an area that has been warded with it.
  • Wolfsbane: Malia can be weakened or killed by exposure to wolfsbane, depending on the species and the method of exposure.
  • Full Moon: Though being a werecreature is considered a gift in the supernatural, it also comes with a price, which is that the Werewolf, Werecoyote, or werejaguar is beholden to the phases of the moon.
  • Lunar Eclipse: During the phase of a lunar eclipse where the moon is completely covered in the earth's umbral shadow, a Werecoyote or other werecreature will lose all of their powers,
  • Electricity: Werecoyotes can be weakened or killed by exposure to electricity, depending on the level of voltage used.
  • Letharia Vulpina: As a canine Werecreature, Werecoyotes, like Werewolves, can be weakened by exposure to letharia vulpina,
  • Modified Canine Distemper Virus: Malia, a Werecoyote, was exposed to the virus and nearly died from it after beginning to bleed black blood from her nose, mouth, and ears, and after losing her vision completely. Malia was also the one who became the sickest in their shortest amount of time out of herself, the Werewolf Scott McCall and the Thunder Kitsune Kira Yukimura.
  • Loud Noises: Werecoyotes, as supernatural creatures with heightened senses of hearing, are vulnerable to sounds at certain frequencies. For example, the Argent Hunters are known for using ultrasonic emitters that produce an extremely high-pitched noise that only animals and people with supernaturally enhanced senses can hear. There are certain subsonic, low-pitched sounds that can be used against Werecreatures as well,

Possessions[]

Facilities[]

  • Hale Vault: The vault can only be opened by a Hale. For example, due to Malia being the biological daughter of Peter Hale, she can unlock it like her family. Malia , Kira and Scott all hid in the vault when they were infected with the lycanthropy virus.

Trivia[]

  • During her time as a coyote, deer was her favorite food. After readjusting to human life, Malia developed a liking for pizza. However it is highly likely that Malia liked pizza before she transformed.
  • Malia was only nine years old when this happened. She is seventeen years old in Season 3, putting her birth around 1994 (as her episode took place in October 2011).
  • Although Malia didn't have the same connection to Deucalion as her aunt and Scott, his death still had a negative impact on her and made her feel sad. This is likely because Deucalion played a role in helping her escape her mother, Corinne, by taking Belasko's talons from Theo and giving them to Scott, who then passed them on to Stiles and eventually to Malia.
