Background[]

The Little Mermaid: Against the Tide[]

In the prequel novel, Mala and her sisters lost their mother at a young age when Ursula tricked Queen Athena into swimming into an area filled with mermaid hunters. She later gained the Chaine Sea as her domain. Despite her father's ban on his daughters falling in love with their sea monster representatives, Mala fell in love with Ieka the Notorious, the sea snake barracuda hybrid sea monster resident of the Chaine Sea.

Personality[]

According to the visual guide, The Little Mermaid: Guide to Merfolk Mala is the most fearless of her sisters, committed to protecting the reefs at any cost. She hates shipwrecks, they pollute her ocean and leave a havoc on the seashore. She is also married to her sea monster companion, Ieka the Notorious. Because her father forbade any kind of fraternizing between his daughters and their sea monster representatives, they got married in secret. This shows a somewhat rebellious side from Mala and proves that she to put her heart first.

She rules the Chaine Sea, where the waters are filled with islands, shallows, and islets. She is a strong leader, intrepid, and loved by all for her sense of humor. She has sent messages on seaweed scrolls to humans before her father forbade such interactions. Since her mother's death, Mala has hated humans and the damage they do to the seas.

In Against the Tide, Mala's always teased by Caspia and Indira.

Trivia[]

  • Mala is just like her sister, Ariel: they both have forbidden romances with different species (Mala married her sea monster companion Ieka and Ariel married a human, Eric.) Additionally, both relationships earned Triton's disapproval at first. However, at the end of the prequel novel Triton accepts Mala and Ieka's relationship and removes the ban. So, in a way, Ieka and Mala's relationship could be a precursor to Ariel and Eric's relationship.
    • Ironically, Mala and Ariel's animated counterparts are the only sisters married. Attina is confirmed to be married to another Prince of another kingdom.
