Madeline "Maddie" Fenton is a major protagonist in Nickelodeon's Danny Phantom. She is the sister of Alicia, the wife of Jack Fenton, the former love interest of Vlad Plasmius, the mother of Jazz Fenton and Danny Phantom, and the adoptive/genetic mother of Dani Phantom. She is a ghost hunter who is the co-owner of Fenton Works, which she owns with her husband, as well as the matriarch of the Fenton family. However, she tends to be the more rational of the two and would rather study ghosts than tear them apart molecule by molecule like her husband. For most of the show she is unaware that her son is the "ghost boy" she and her husband are hunting. However, in "Planet Phantom", Jazz revealed that Danny was Danny Phantom and both Maddie and Jack have accepted their son for who he is.
At least twenty years into the future, Maddie is the mother-in-law of Sam Manson, and the paternal grandmother of Jackson Fenton and Misty Fenton

Role in the series
Background
Most of Maddie's early life is not revealed in the series; however, she was born in Spittoon, Arkansas the only relative of Maddie's that has been seen was a sister named Alicia. Whether she was her older sister or younger sister was unknown and Maddie's maiden name has never been revealed on the show.
College Years
Befriending Jack and Vlad
Around 1984, Maddie attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, tweny-years prior to the series. the same graduating class with her future husband, Jack Fenton, Vlad Masters. In college, she and Jack and Vlad were all best friends. Maddie was also friends with another classmate Harriet Chin, who did not seem to mind her like Jack at all. The young woman did ghostly research with both Jack and Vlad, which caused the trio to remain close. However, both Jack and Vlad developed feelings for Maddie, who remained unaware about Vlad's romantic feelings for her because she already liked Jack.
Proto-portal Incident

One day when working their prototype proto-portal that would theoretically open up to the ghost dimension, Maddie realized the calculations Jack made was incorrect while they both did not realize that Jack had used diet cola rather the ecto-purifier into the porto-portal's filtrator because he was distracted by looking at Maddie. As Jack turned on the portal prototype, the results were catastrophic when ecto energy bombarded Vlad with ghost particles and giving him a bad case of ecto acne. The incident devastated Vlad and he was hospitalized for the dangerous case that eventually killed his social life. Afterwards, Vlad lost contact with his former friends altogether, blaming the latter for what happened to him. Unknown to Maddie and Jack, Vlad became the world's first ghost-human hybrid because of the incident. In 1984, the group graduated for College. However, for twenty-years, Vlad plotted his revenge against Jack and vowed to do anything to win Maddie back, despite his new found ghost powers.
Marriage with Jack Fenton

Eventually graduating from the university of Wisconsin, Jack and Maddie married each other on May 9th, 1986. However Alicia, Maddie's sister, disapproved of their marriage. Moving to Amity Park, the couple eventually founded Fenton Works, where they continued their ghostly research despite what happened with Vlad back in college. Because of their ghost obsession, Maddie and Jack were regarded as crazy by some of their neighbors, like Jeremy and Pamela Manson and Damon Gray. Sometimes, their marriage was not easy. In some cases, Jack would sometimes forget their wedding anniversaries every year, and Maddie would leave in anger for a couple of days. Almost every year, they would argue about whether Santa Claus existed or not, which became something of a holiday tradition for Maddie and Jack.

Sometime after their marriage, Maddie and Jack had two children of their own, a daughter named Jasmine born around 1988 and a son, Daniel (nicknamed Danny). However, their children grew up around their parents' arguments, inventions and obsession's with ghostly research, leading Jazz to be both a mother and father figure rather than being his sister. Despite their parents' obvious ghost obsession, Jazz and Danny would eventually learn to cope with their parents' unique personalities and one day, become ghost hunters themselves like their parents. When Danny was younger, he and Maddie were very close but as he got older, Danny drifted away from Maddie due to his ghost secret and his friendships with Sam and Tucker developing since the second grade. Jack and Maddie would eventually invent the Fenton Portal but were distraught when they found it couldn't work. However, when Danny brought Sam and Tucker down to the lab he tried it despite it not working for his parents. Determined to check it out, Danny put on a hazmat suit and walked into his parents' inventions, accidentally turning on the machine by pressing the on switch in the portal. The portal activated and Danny was exposed to ecto-energy from the portal and became a half-ghost but kept the secret from both Maddie and Jack in fear of what they would think of him.

Post Series/Aftermath
Sometime after the Disasteroid incident, Maddie learns of Danielle's existence from her son and his friends. Despite Dani being a clone created by their son's arch-enemy Vlad Plasmius, Jack and Maddie accept Danielle as their own child and biological daughter and decide to adopt her into their family.
Eventually, both Jack and Maddie become official members of Team Phantom, helping their son and his friends in fighting other ghost supervillains who will harm the citizens of their hometown of Amity Park. Eventually, Madddie will use two hunting ghosts chained to leashes and will act as bloodhounds for her to hunt down more ghosts, especially in the Ghost Zone.
After Danny's marriage to Sam, Maddie would become the girl's mther-in-law and the grandmother of hers and Danny's children Jackson and Misty

Appearance
Maddie has short auburn hair, fair skin and violet eyes with a tall and slim build. Maddie wears a light bluish-teal hazmat suit and usually puts on a hood over her head, as well as black googled with red lenses. She also has a collar gloves, belt and boots that are all colored black. Maddie also has a pointed chin and both Danny and Jazz inherited their mother's facial structure and figure.
In the flashback from "Bitter Reunions" when she was younger, her hair was longer and had a perm during her college years and she wore a lab coat. Someone after giving birth to Danny, Maddie kept her hair pulled back in a ponytail.
When she isn't wearing her hazmat suit, all of Maddie's clothes are colored teal.

Alicia (Sister)
Alicia and Maddie love each other, and Maddie often visits herseister whenevr she can. After having a fight with Jack, Maddie goes to Spittoon, Arkansas to visit her for her sister's divorce anniversary. ALicia often voices her dislike of jack and does not approve of her sister's marriage to Jack. However, Alicia loves her sister nonetheless.
Jack Fenton (Husband)
Jack is Maddie's husband and was her best friend in college, along with Vlad and being in the same graduating class of 1984. During their time together, Jack and Maddie fell in love, eventually marrying each other, They manage to keep a stable and steady marriage, owhich has resulted them in starting a family of their own and having three wonderful children: two daughters, Danielle (despite her being a clone) and Jasmine and a son, Daniel. However, like any married couple, Jack and Maddie have their issues. This is mainly seen in the episode "Prisoners of Love," where Jack forgot theiir wedding anniversary, leading Maddie to often leave the house for a few days whenever he would forget it.
Of the two, Maddie seems to be the most rational and often acts as her husband's voice of reason and being more cautious about their children's safety. Maddie will also not hesitate to defend her husband whenever Vlad speaks ill-will of him ("Maternal Instincts.") Despite his flaws, Maddie loves him truly for who he is.
Jazz Fenton (Daughter)
Jazz is more like her mother than she thinks. While she is basically a miniature version of her mother, Jazz disagrees with her mother's ghost obsessions, which leads to Maddie and Jazz in having a strange relationship. Despite her daughter concerning that she was an adult in a sixteen year old's body, Maddie knows that Jazz shouldn't grow up too fast. She was also the only one concerned about Jack's new invention about "sucking a ghost" seemingly overshadowing Jazz and Maddie knew they could accidentally hurt their daughter. Despite their initial strained relationship, Jazz thinks Maddie is a someone she can look up to. At one point, Jazz dressed up as her mother when Maddie and Danny were away on vacation just to test out her parents' psychology. This was actually the first time Jazz ever showed a knack for ghost hunting and just like her mother, she also knew Martial Arts as she fought bread that came from their microwave to life. However, as the series went on, Jazz developed a love of ghost hunting just like Maddie (and Jack) which allowed them to grow closer and mend their broken relationship. In "Girls' Night Out," Jazz was glad her mother was finally working on invention on her own for a change and not having to fix Jack's own and later helped Maddie come up with a name for it, the Maddie Modulator when they were facing Ember, Kitty and Spectra. Maddie also defended Jazz when Sam was about to come up with another plan at stopping the girl ghosts when their first plan failed.Maddie is completely proud of her daughter and the young woman she is becoming. After Jazz embraces the family business, the two grow closer.
Danny Phantom (Son)
When Danny was younger, he and Maddie were close but as he grew older, they drifted apart. However they reconnected in "Maternal Instinct." Though Danny loves her, he never reveals to her that he is the ghost boy that she and Jack are hunting. She is fiercely protective of him and accepts his ghost half in Reality Trip and permanently knows his secret in "Planet Phantom." Whenever Danny is in danger, whether it would be his own ghost fighting problems, Maddie will forget about the ghost hunting and immediately protect him.
Sam Manson (Daughter-in-law)
Unlike Sam's mother Pamela's opinion of Danny, Maddie shows no ill-will towards Sam and accepts her as one of her son's best friends. Since Sam has been Danny and Tucker's best friend since second grade, Maddie probably knew both Sam and Tucker since then. In "Boxed Up Fury," she shows concern for both Sam and Tucker by telling them to close to her, Jazz and Jack with the Box Ghost on the loose, showing Maddie puts their safety as a priority as well.
At least twenty years into the future, Maddie would gain Sam as a daughter-in-law and be a grandmother to both hers and Danny's children, Jackson and Misty.

Tucker Foley
Tucker is very respectful towards Danny's mom, calling her "Mrs. F" and Maddie accepts Danny's friendship with Tucker. Since Tucker has been one of Danny's friends since at least the second grade, Maddie knew both Sam and Tucker when they were younger. Tucker will usually cover for Danny when he is fighting as Danny Phantom in front of Maddie and her husband. At one point Tucker shoved his hat into Maddie's face just to distract her. This caused Maddie to grew uncomfortable around Tucker and told him "to do something about the smell." In "Boxed Up Fury," she told both Tucker and Sam to stay close to her, Jazz and Jack, showing Maddie puts their safety as a priority as well.
Enemies
Vlad Plasmius (Ex-Best Friend)
In college, Maddie was best friends with Vlad, but cared for him in a platonic way. However, Vlad claimed to have a crush on Maddie. However, his so-called love for her is one-sided, Twenty years at their college reunion, Maddie now sees her former best friend as a conniving and egotistical man who cares for no one but himself and though he claims to have "saved" Danny in Reign Storm, she is uncomfortable around him, even pouring hot tea on his lap and head and not wanting Jazz to stay with him in Wisconsin. During Phantom Planet, Maddie was in utter shock when she learned Vlad was the Wisconsin Ghost, and lost any little respect she had for him.
Pamela and Jeremy Manson (Rivals)
It is shown that Sam's and Danny's parents do not like each other. For the Mansons, they do not like Maddie or her husband not just because of her sense of style and love of jumpsuits. In "Girls Night' Out," to her horror, herpartner for Spectra's ghost cooking channel in the woman-dominated Amity Park, and Maddie showed immediate disgust and chagrin when she learned her partner was Pamela. Though Maddie doesn't hide her obvious dread and annoyance at being paired with Pamela, who merely smiles and cheerfully says Maddie's name as Maddie glowers at Mrs. Manson. This shows that both parties mutually dislike each other, except they still let their children remain friends and Madie has no qualms with Sam being friends with Danny.
