Madame Zeroni is one of the supporting and important characters in the 1998 novel, Holes, and its 2003 film adaptation

Physical Appearance[]
Madame Zeroni was an elderly woman who mostly wore a turban. She had light brown skin and brown eyes. It was also worth mentioning that Madame Zeroni is missing her left foot.
Role in Holes[]
Madame Zeroni lived in Latvia and is friends with Elya Yelnats, who would rather spend his time with her rather than being with other men. Though she disapproves of his wish to have Myra Menkey as a partner, Madame Zeroni gives Elya her smallest pig and tells him to carry it up the mountain and let it drink at the springs. She instructs him to also sing "If Only, If Only" as it drinks. Everyday the pig will grow bigger. She also adds that when he gives the pig to Myra's father, then Elya should carry her up the mountain and sing the song as she drinks from the fountain so she could get stronger too. However, Madame Zeroni warns Elya that if he does not return for her, then Elya and his family would be cursed for always and eternity.
Since Elya forgot to go back for Madame Zeroni, the curse is laid upon his family. Eventually, Madame Zeroni passes from old age. Her spirit is seen smiling over as Stanley finally breaks a long-running family curse when singing to Madame Zeroni's great-great-great-grandson.
