Lord Viren (also known as High Mage Viren) is one of the two secondary antagonists of the high fantasy adventure series, The Dragon Prince. He is the High Mage of the Royal Court who uses dark magic to solve his problems. He is also King Harrow's former best friend, Claudia and Soren's father, as well as the latter and Rayla's archenemy. He is also formerly the unwitting pawn of Aaravos, who he was trying to help break out of his prison.
Two years later, he was revived by Claudia, who went great-lengths to save him. They needed to find Aaravos' prison so the spell on Viren would be made permanent. After stealing the map from Umber Tor, Viren fell into a coma, and went through a vision quest where he gained an awakening. However, the heroes got the Pearl before Claudia could. Despite Viren's death, he was shortly revived by Claudia but left her alone in disgust. He would later return to Katolis but his return was faced with grief from Soren and anger from Ezran. However, Viren sacrificed his heart in order to save the people of Katolis from Sol Regem's fire. Before he used the spell, Viren begins to remember his good memories with Lissa, Soren, and Claudia.
He was succeeded by Prince Callum as the next High Mage of Katolis.
Sky magic: With the assistance of a Sky Primal Stone and later Aaravos, Lord Viren was able to use sky magic.
Aspiro Frigis/Ice Blast: A variant of the spell, "Aspiro", "Aspiro Frigis" creates an arctic ice blast that allows the user to immobilize a powerful enemy. Viren cast the spell to immobilize Avizandum, Tiadrin and Lain. He used the same spell on their daughter, Rayla during the battle of the Storm Spire, but he had Aaravos' assistance this time.

Trivia
Originally, Viren was going to have purple eyes but was changed to avoid any confusion that he might be an elf.
The core theme of his character is sacrifice.
Viren is somewhat like Lord Ozai:
They're both power hungry men and powerful users of phenomenal powers (Viren is a dark mage and Ozai is a powerful Firebender).
They also wear dark colors (red for Ozai and black and gold for Viren).
They seek to get rid of an ultimate power (Aang and Zym).
Their enemies are a young group of heroes (Team Avatar and Team Zym) serving as a threat to their goals.
They both need to unite the world together under one rule (Viren wishes to unite all the human kingdoms and wage war on Xadia. Meanwhile, Ozai wants to take over the Four Nations).
They both have two children (Azula and Zuko and Claudia and Soren. They ironically favor the daughter (Azula and Claudia) over the older son (Zuko and Soren).
Both their sons end up getting tired of his abuse and side with the heroes instead.
Unlike Ozai, however Viren is more of a tragic villain. He truly loves his son, as he used dark magic to save Soren when he was a young child and immediately horrified by Aaravos' revelation that his resurrection requires the blood of one of his children to ensure Lord Viren's resurrection.
