Bilbo grew fond of the pony, even feeding her apples in the middle of the night and affectionately doting on her.
While Fili and Kili, the princes of Durin's Folk, were charged to watch the ponies for the night, a troll comes in and steals Myrtle and her pony companion, Minty. Her master, Bilbo, went out to rescue them and he told his horse to shush along with the other three and tried to snatch the knife, but then the trolls moved again and Bilbo had to try harder. Eventually the Trolls caught him and then Thorin's company comes in to reswcue Bilbo. During the fight, Bilbo frees the ponies. Myrtle flees back to camp, but later they bolt, much to the company's distraught and warning.
