Letharia vulpina (wolf lichen) is a fruticose lichenized species of fungus in the family Parmeliaceae and a plant featured on MTV's Teen Wolf.
History[]
It grows on the back of living and dead conifer trees in Europe, the Pacific Northwest, and the Rocky Mountain regions of Colorado. In the series, a powerful, a rare version of letharia vulpina was unique because it grew from the blood of a Nogitsune-possessed Kumicho spilled onto a cement fountain in Ikeda's garden the night Chris Argent saved Silverfinger from the Oni the first time.
After hearing Chris Argent's story, Deaton journeyed to Japan, where he paralyzed Ikeda's wolf with Kanima Venom so he could gain access to the garden and the wolf lichen. After he was shown the plant, Deaton paralyzed Ikeda with the kanima venom and stole the lethearia vulpina from Ikeda's garden. He was able to poison the Nogitsune with the lichen by distilling it into a liquid and injecting it into one of the major blood vessels in Stiles Stilinski's neck and saving Scott McCall at the same time. The poison's effects lasted for two to three days. However, the Nogitsune's healing process from the poison was accelerated because Stiles was given haloperidol, an anti-psychotic that caused him to sleep for several hours. This made him more vulnerable to the Nogitsune's weakened influence, thus providing the Dark Kitsune with an opportunity to regain control earlier than expected ("Echo House")
