This article is about the character from the Arrowverse. For her comics counterpart, see Lena Luthor (DC).
Lena Kieran Luthor (born Lena Kieran Walsh[1]) is one of the two tritagonists of the television series Supergirl (alongside J'onn J'onzz). She is the current CEO of LuthorCorp, the paternal half-sister of Lex Luthor, the best friend of Kara Danvers, the godmother and Aunt of Esme Danvers-Olsen, and the ex-girlfriend of James Olsen. In the first four seasons, Lena was a hero but after her breakup with James and being lied to by Kara after all those years, she begins to show off her darker side.
For most of Season 5, Lena is initially angry at Kara for never telling her that she is Supergirl and gets back at her. However, Lena eventually realizes the error of her ways, reconciles with Kara, and becomes her best friend again.
In the sixth season, Lena becomes one of the Superfriends and learns her mother is a witch. Since then, Lena has become a witch herself and finally found a family who will love her and accept her for who she is.

Personality
Unlike most of her family, Lena Luthor was one of the kindest and purest Luthor in her entire family. Growing up in a household with both Lex and Lillian Luthor after her father, Lionel died, Lena remained honorable, resourceful, selfless, and honest. While proud of the family name, Lena was appalled by her adoptive mother and half-brother's actions, especially Lex's vendetta against Superman and Lillian's racist and fanatic actions against other aliens. She also highly respected Lionel and would become defensive of him whenever Lillian insulted him, implying a close relationship and that Lionel favored Lena.
She was determined to restore her family name, and by extension, her father. However, she holds crucial information on her known allies out of necessity rather than malice. Her intelligence, integrity, morals, and support help make her a crucial ally as well as an honest person.
However, she is a dangerous enemy to those who would underestimate her or those who put her friends and family in danger. Despite Lillian warning Chet Miner that he should not underestimate her daughter, Chet makes the mistake of doing just that, and Queen Rhea soon follows suit. She also feigned her allegiance to Lillian so she could destroy the Medusa virus and turned her mother up to the authorities. She could also tell Rhea's true alien nature, voiding the Daxamite Queen's business proposal and telling her to leave. At the age of four, she was able to beat her older half-brother in chess.
She also admires those with a "brutal honesty" streak; for example, when Clark subtly accused her of sabotaging a rocket launch, Lena was amused by Kent, saying he had some "steel behind that Kansas charm." Despite this, Lena's strong moral compass prevents her from exhibiting that same level of appreciation towards those of less than honorable intent. For example, she showed her disgust for Beth Breen and Morgan Edge's unethical usage of their respective companies. Instead, they looked out for themselves rather than the well-being of other people, including their company. She also stopped L-Corp's military contracts and channels because some of the individuals would use L-Corp's warfare technology for terrorism and murder. This is due to her family being associated with murder and attempted world domination.
Because of her need to find a name for herself and feeling like an outsider among her own family, Lena was able to develop a genuine friendship with Kara Danvers and later forge an alliance with Supergirl. By Season 3, Lena had regarded Kara as her best friend and insisted that they go on a first-name basis. However, she was unaware that her best friend and Supergirl were the same person until Lex Luthor revealed it to Lena after she shot him in self-defense. Some of Kara's friends disapproved of their friendship because some believed Lena was just like her entire family. One could go so far as to say that - with Cat Grant leaving National City - upon their first encounter, Lena has since become the "new Cat" in Kara's life who occasionally gives out sage advice based on her own life's experiences, much like Cat did. Lena initially had a good relationship with Kara Danvers and by extension, her alter-ego, Supergirl, but after she discovered that the latter had violated her privacy, she became openly cold and distant towards the Kryptonian, despite their strained relationship, she was still willing to help clear Supergirl's name when a copy of the Kryptonian (Red Daughter) attack the White House.
Lena still had a good relationship with Kara (initially unaware that Kara/Supergirl was the same). However, after feeling betrayed by Kara for not telling her her secret, she no longer considered Kara and the Superfriends as her friends. This was proven when a dying Lex shows her a video recording of Kara using her Kryptonian powers. He also revealed to her that Kara is Supergirl and that the Kryptonian has been lying to her from the beginning. Although she was willing to celebrate victory with Kara and the rest of their friends, Lena vented out her anger by crushing a picture of the two of them together. Lena became exactly what she hated.
Even when she turned evil and did some terrible things, Lena was just a damaged woman who had been so consumed by her tragic inner struggles that she became blinded by her feelings and gained a false sense of justice. Beneath her rough exterior of a hateful and cynical misanthrope, she was truly an insecure and misguided person who only wanted everyone to be honest and pleasant to others. She is also capable of showing respect towards her enemies and had attachments to the very few people she cared about at that point and does some good things despite her villainy.
Overall, through her complexity, Lena is ultimately a good-natured person who just wants to help people in her way. It was not until some of the test subjects from Obsidian reacted violently to the virtual reality that Lena realized the horrible mistakes she made. By the end of season 6, Lena had become close friends with the Superfriends and became a valued member of the team. She formed a genuine friendship with Alex and Brainiac-5, even becoming the godmother of Alex and Kelly's daughter, Esme.
Lena and Kara's friendship was, without a doubt, one of the strongest bonds in the series, having endured several trials similar to Barry and Iris and Oliver and Felicity. Their bond was so strong that no matter how Lex attempted to ruin their friendship, they always found a way to get back to each other. According to Kara, Lena was the one who challenged her the most and the one who always had her back in the end.
Even though she is a woman of science, she used her gift of science and magic for her.

- ↑ According to "The Adventures of Supergirl" episode, Lena tells Clark (and Kara) that her last name wasn't always 'Luthor.' Additionally, it wasn't known that Lena was Lex is half-sister until the episode "Luthors." Those two pieces of information coming to mind and the fact that Lena's biological mother was named Elizabeth Walsh implies that Lena was born Lena Kieran Walsh.
- ↑ Rhea tried forcing Lena to marry Mon-El and she reluctantly agreed because Rhea threatened to kill the children at her hospital. They almost went through with it so they are ex-betrothed.
