Kyoshi is one of the overarching protagonists of the Nickelodeon animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra and the titular main protagonist of the Chronicles of the Avatar novels, The Rise of Kyoshi and The Shadow of Kyoshi. She is an Earth Kingdom-born Avatar of the Past succeeding Kuruk and preceding Roku as part of the Avatar Cycle. In her lifetime, Kyoshi was regarded as one of the greatest Avatars of all time and the founder of the Kyoshi Island. She was the daughter of Jesa, a renegade Air Nomad nun, and Hark, a thief from an impoverished family of Earth Kingdom actors. Her legacy lives on through the Avatars and the Kyoshi Warriors, women named in honor of her and carry on Kyoshi's teachings.
