Kya is a supporting character in the Avatar franchise, appearing in The Legend of Korra. She is Aang and Katara's only daughter, Bumi and Tenzin's sister, Hakoda and Kya's only granddaughter, Jinora, Ikki, Meelo, and Rohan's aunt, and Sokka's niece. She was the only one of her siblings to inherit her mother's Water-bending powers.
Kya was named after her late maternal grandmother.
History[]
Kya was born in Wolf Cove in the Southern Water Tribe to Avatar Aang and waterbending master Katara. She was named in honor of her late maternal grandmother, who sacrificed her life to protect Katara from a Southern Raider. She has two brothers, Bumi and Tenzin, the latter of whom she and would often tease. Forty years prior to the series, Kya was well acquainted with Prince Iroh and had some form of relationship with the other members of Team Avatar and their children. She was the first Waterbender born to an air nomad in world history and the only one of her siblings to inherit their mother's waterbending abilities. Kya was also educated in Air Nomad culture growing up, and always felt an affinity to her father's heritage. Although she developed a slight resentment toward Aang for teaching more to Tenzin about his culture, Kya internalized some of her father's lessons on philosophy, meditation, and balance. Instead, she developed a strong bond with Katara.
As she grew older, Kya became a master Waterbender in her own right and eventually became a healer. Due to Aang's duties as the Avatar and teaching Tenzin how to carry on the Air Nation heritage, Kya and Bumi spent little time with their father, a fact that troubled them deeply. Despite her distant relationship with her father, Aang was nothing but supportive of Kya when she came out as gay. She once had a relationship with a girlfriend but they ultimately broke up. After Aang's passing in 153 AG, Kya returned to the Southern Water Tribe to tend to her grieving mother, as her brothers were occupied by their respective professions.
